The household fire going out only once a year

A wonderful memory of Christmas in Queen Street, Castletown, in the 1940s, when goose was the bird of choice for the Christmas meal, even though it was too large to be cooked in the home...
The solution was remarkable, and a wonderful example of the town's community in that period.

A wonderful description of going around the houses singing carols in 1940s Castletown.
Rather than the quaint idyll some might expect, Peter Hill-Heaton and his friends were more interested in the pennies to be earned rather than any sort of uplifting of Christmas spirit!

Philip Leighton Stowell is well-remembered in the Isle of Man for his connection to traditional Manx dance and its revival.
However, he was enormously influential for generations of young people who benefitted from his role as a school teacher, wherein he would be sure that children were exposed to as much Manx culture he could get across.

Few will realise today that there was once a small wood and pond on Queen Street, Castletown.
In the 1940s there were even duck's there, who never laid any eggs... or, at least, not that were left after the youths of around about had checked in on them!

St Martins triumphed over St Annes in a captivating affair on Sunday to win their 5th Senior Title, while Liam Mellows won their first hurling title in 57 years after a brilliant game vs Monagear Boolavogue. We were joined by man of the match from the Senior final Rory O'Connor, scorer of the winning point from the Intermediate A final Brendan Halpin, and Wexford Senior Hurling manager Keith Rossiter to provide some much needed balance.
