Amarillo

Cimarron ist ein stilles, poetisches Lied über Verlust, Erinnerung und das Bleiben – während jemand anderes gegangen ist. Der Text erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes, der allein in der Weite des Landes zurückbleibt, irgendwo außerhalb von Cimarron. Er spricht nicht direkt zur verlorenen Liebe, sondern an einen imaginären Boten – jemand, der ihr begegnen könnte.

Die Sprache ist schlicht und dennoch voller Bilder: staubige Stiefel, alte Flussbetten, Mesquite-Bäume und der Duft der Dämmerung. Der Schmerz ist da, aber nie dramatisch. Statt Vorwürfen spürt man stille Akzeptanz, ein tiefes Nachklingen der Liebe, die nicht mehr brennt, aber auch nie ganz erloschen ist.

Das Lied erinnert an alte Westernballaden – aber mit einer modernen, feinfühligen Stimme. Es geht nicht um das große Finale, sondern um das, was bleibt, wenn niemand mehr hinsieht: ein Name in einer Pappel, ein Schatten im Abendlicht, ein Mann, der den Sonnenuntergang anschaut, ohne ihn zu fühlen.


Cimarron is a quiet, poetic song about loss, memory, and staying behind while someone else has moved on. It tells the story of a man left alone in the wide, open land - somewhere just outside of Cimarron. He doesn’t speak directly to his lost love but addresses an imagined passerby, someone who might see her on the road.

The language is simple yet rich in imagery: dusty boots, dried riverbeds, mesquite trees, and the scent of dawn. The pain is present, but never loud. Instead of blame, there’s quiet acceptance - a lingering echo of love that no longer burns, but never fully died.

The song feels like a modern western ballad - gentle and cinematic. It’s not about the dramatic farewell, but about what remains when no one’s watching: a name carved in cottonwood, a shadow stretching at sunset, a man who watches the sun go down and doesn’t feel it fall.

It is not uncommon to hear people talk about the important relationships that can be built between humans and non-human animals – often they are mammals, but there are a few fish fanciers and bird lovers out there as well.  And that isn’t even taking into consideration the folks who have developed endearing connections to plants.  The argument is that we clearly benefit from close relationships with non-humans.  It isn’t just pets, but there are a host of businesses doing horseback riding for folks with particular challenges, or goat yoga for those who find such things calming.  And I’ve also heard about tourist farms that let you hang out with a cow for awhile, just to get the blood pressure down.  Yours, that is.  Can’t tell about the cow, exactly.  Well, my guest today understands all about that.  He finds great comfort in being around his cattle.  As he told me at one point “cows just live in the moment; we all need to be just like cows; they don’t worry about where their food’s coming from tomorrow; they just eat the grass in front of them, and lay down.”

Today we are in Central Labrador, at Aldercroft Farm.  If you take Highway 520 out of Happy Valley Goose Bay, heading toward Sheshatshiu and North West River, and you take the correct turnoff, you may come across a herd of Scottish Highland Cattle.  You’ll want to get your camera out for that.  They are very photogenic.  I meet up with Darren Dinsmore.  He loves farming, and especially appreciates cattle, and has made it his mission to build a farm, and a herd of cattle, here in Labrador.  And speaking of missions, he is also a Pastor.  At some point, I’ll likely ask him about the connection between those two roles.  Here, put on some bear grease for the bugs, and join us.

A new opportunity for women looking to gain hands-on ranching experience is coming to Alberta this summer.

The first-ever Female Ranch Camp will take place June 18–22 in Yellowhead County. Organized by Business Wide-View, the camp is modelled after a successful U.S. program and aims to build confidence, skills, and a stronger sense of community among women in agriculture.

“We’re taking up to 12 women to the camp,” says B-J Fuchs, owner of Business Wide-View and host of the event. “They’ll be learning real-life ranch skills through a series of stations — from sorting cattle, operating a chute, branding, ear tagging, to administering vaccines. It’s an environment designed for women to try new things, learn ranch hand activities, and not feel intimidated.”

The camp has already attracted participants from across North America, including the United States, Eastern Canada, and Mexico. Interest has also come from as far away as Australia and Brazil, though visa issues have delayed some international participants until future camps.
