D6+A13 / Percussion: Bb3 - hammer rapidly 10 ten times to slightly stagger a warped and elongated sus. cymbal sample

D0, D1+V & D5+G (after D6+A13 off) in various combinations to cycle the sample at various speeds, pitches, directions, to improvise on. The timings affect each staggered sample differently, scrambling them as setup for the next part

Above a resistance threshold of ~120ohms, V+A13, 14, 15, 16, 17 speeds up the cycle greatly, which sounds like a fast scrub through pitches/timbres/durations

Below the threshold, the cycles seems to freeze and loop on a small (~.100ms to 1s) subsection. Because the ten samples are all scrambled, they make a complex polyrhythm by freezing at different pitches/timbres/durations

Right at the threshold (very precisely, a few ticks on a 10 turn 100 ohm pot will tip it over), the cycles will freeze, jump to a new subsection, and freeze again. How long it freezes for is random, possibly due to slight fluctuations in voltage causing it to tip over

While this is going on, G+A12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 in various combinations lets you exclusively change the timbre. With 10 turn 100 ohm pot, you can tween between the timbres with white noise in between

The limiting factor is mainly that you cannot connect an Address line to both G and V at the same time (this would cause a short circuit and turn off the keyboard)

However, certain combinations of A+V and A+G produce the same sound. So in order to smoothly explore the variety of interesting sounds in this mode, you need to weave between combinations and use these certain special combinations as pivot points

The challenge was finding a balance between sounds I wanted to explore and how reasonable the path to get there was. Last slide is the map of combinations (above) led to the path (below) with steps

Lastly, the 'bells' part uses A0-A12 + G to change 'frequency quality', and the ending was a lucky random effect caused by slowly short circuiting between V+D6+A13+G using a pot

Some edits were done in audacity - crossfading, editing of takes together, compression and eq, but can be performed live

There is no swing programmed on this pattern. Its just the circuit bent effects doing weird things to the sounds and making it groove.

This song is partly about the tragic life of Léon Theremin, inventor of one of the of the first electronic instruments in the 1930's. He ended up owing too much money to banks to continue developing his futuristic devices. So he returned to Russia, only to be thrown into a concentration camp until he was released and forced to invent things of Military significance (such as the world's first bugging device).

I brought Albert Glinsky's biography of Theremin but I couldn't read it because it was too depressing. It is a great injustice that of the smartest people of the last 100 years could not find the freedom to pursue his dreams in either "Democratic" or "Socialist" states due to the respective economic and ideological restrictions that each culture imposed to discourage individuals them from pursuing anything idealistic or radical.
Even in the Soviet Union, none of his contributions could be recognised by the state because officially he didn't even exist and all the work he did was top secret.

Most of the actual lyrics are about a friend's experience living with a mentally handicapped woman called Olga. Although she had apparently escaped the horrors of Soviet institutionalisation, being here in Australia she probably wasn't much better off as she had been left to fend for herself. Eventually her estranged daughter returned from Chicago, sold Olga's house and stuck her in a nursing home before returning to Chicago to leave her mother die alone.

The sample at the start is the death of Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov during the re-entry of Soyuz 1 in 1967. As far as we know the sample is copyright free...if anyone can prove otherwise we will remove it from the mix.
If anyone wants to use the same sample in thier own tracks go to JB HI FI and buy Sound Effects 2 compact disc for 10 dollars. SP11012 (Digimode LTD - 1995) Most of the environmental sounds on these discs are terribly recorded (Ridiculous hiss and background noise) but if you buy a few discs your chances improve of getting something usable.
Overall, "Soviet Reunion" about the governments not caring for individuals welfare (Democratic or Socialist) and people dying as a result. Then years later the governments try and smooth it over by proclaiming those they inadvertently jailed or killed as "Heroes" or as is the case with Islam "Martyrs"..

From the medieval carvings (1490 – 1495) from within the choir stalls of Ripon Cathedral on one of the lavishly ornate carved Misericords. This carving is of a Pig or may probably be a Hog that is playing a set of bagpipes. There are many carvings from the medieval period found throughout English Cathedrals today that show pigs and hogs having fun and participating in human cultural activities. In the middle ages these animals were thought of as being jolly, intelligent and most of all being happy and content with life in times that were very uncertain for the people of the period. Again like most of the carvings from Ripon this is in exceptional condition and recreated with all the fine detail from the master craftsmen that carved them.
