Une voix digitalisée énumère quelques 200 noms d’herbe. Liste non exhaustive de tous les types d’herbe, de l’herbe à calalou à l’herbe à Chiron, de l’herbe à plumets en passant par l’herbe aux sorcières jusqu’à l’herbe sardonique, toutes ces herbes sont citées dans leur terminologie populaire. Là où le botaniste conserverait la Nepeta faassenii ou Nepeta cataria, Emmanuelle Ly retient herbe aux chats. C’est le nom d’usage qui précisément l’intéresse même si bien souvent il échappe à notre compréhension. Ces petits mystères sont une part d’imaginaire qu’elle souhaite garder intact.
Le principe de la liste sert à développer, démultiplier mais surtout pas à étudier en profondeur pour finalement maîtriser. Cet herbier est prétexte à accumulation, à collection : il vient dire, définir le végétal autrement. Emmanuelle Ly oppose à un savoir encyclopédique, la botanique et son « verbiage scientifique », qui quadrille et contrôle les connaissances, une appropriation, un usage intime de la culture.
Au-delà des mots, le choix s’est porté sur une voix digitale, synthétique, qui vient créer une tension avec la « poésie végétale ». C’est la voix rauque et caverneuse d’une femme qui énonce les termes de façon lancinante, rébarbative, à la manière d’une litanie religieuse. Ceci rappelle non sans ironie les méthodes d’apprentissage de la langue, aujourd’hui désuètes, où le principe est de répéter, et répéter encore pour retenir… 
Cette action d’accumuler et d’énumérer sans réellement classer est une façon de décrire nos modes de vies. Au-delà de l’herbe c’est tout un vocabulaire qui se met en branle nous en disant plus sur ce que nous sommes.
