The Impact of Global Change on Food Security in 2050: Assessing the Risks Through the Lens of Food Trade

Trade is crucial to achieving food security. The Jameel Index for Food Trade and Vulnerability (Jameel Index) is a valuable new tool to guide policy and investment decisions that support sustainable international development and food security through food trade.

The Index provides food trade vulnerability scores for more than 180 countries by synthesizing global indicators into a composite vulnerability index to better understand how food trade dynamics can affect food security. It combines a range of meta-indicators to assess food trade vulnerability for nine staple crops and economically important agricultural commodities. The online platform also allows users to customize the Index to reflect their policy or investment questions.

This seminar will present results from the Jameel Index for global change scenario projections to 2050, with inputs from IFPRI’s Food Modeling Framework. IFPRI’s IMPACT-GLOBE modeling linkage and new bespoke bilateral trade model, developed specifically for the Jameel Index, uses a set of population and economic growth, along with climate change scenarios. The seminar will present findings related to food trade, food import vulnerability, and food security, along with insights on drivers of these findings.

Following the presentation of results, a panel of food trade and development experts will discuss policy implications. A general Q&A session will follow the panel.

In this week’s episode, host Daniel Raimi talks with Kate Gordon about California’s recent raft of climate policies. Gordon, the CEO of California Forward who also has held senior policy positions in California and the US Department of Energy, discusses the various Senate bills that have been proposed and passed recently in the state. She talks about the importance of considering energy affordability when addressing California’s energy and climate concerns and what she’s noticed as evolving perceptions of carbon management. Gordon also touches on specific bills that extend California's cap-and-trade program and ramp up permissions for oil drilling, sharing her own take on the current state of climate policy in California.

What happened at COP30?

AfricaNow! November 26, 2025 Contextualizing COP30 & Remembering Jamil Abdullah al-Amin

Topics and Guests: The first part of AfricaNow! today is a focus on the annual UN Climate Change Conference which took place in Belém, Brazil .  The conference was scheduled from November 10 until November 20, 2025, and it was the 30th annual meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the 1992 UN climate agreement (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [UNFCCC]). The agreement was put into force in 1994—31 years ago this year.  The COP30 conference ended a day later than scheduled.  At the end Global South was able to have in the final agreement triple the funds in adapting its infrastructure to handle the impacts of extreme weather but those funds will not be fully in until 2035.   The final agreement also stated that the phase out of fossil fuels will be voluntary with countries putting in place their own roadmap for that initiative.  Many environmental activists saw this as a setback in the climate change struggle. 

To begin the process of unpacking COP30, the show features a brief conversation with Mithika Mwenda, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance who is based in Nairobi.  Mithika Mwenda contextualizes the recent annual climate change conference COP30–looking at demands of those countries most impacted by climate change, the outcomes of COP30 and more.

He has written for the Nation, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Vice, and The Intercept to name a few outlets. Arun Kundanani has been a scholar-in-residence at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and a former editor of the journal Race & Class, the quarterly journal of the Institute of Race Relations in London. Educated at Cambridge University, he holds a PhD from London Metropolitan University.
