How do our identity and community shape what it means to be an activist? 

How can we be peacebuilders in creative ways and in daily life? 

Despite disproportionately facing the effects of environmental degradation, young indigenous people from across the world are leading the way in advocating for the revitalisation of their heritage and environmental protection through creative practices.

In this episode, we are joined by Maya Sekine, an activist of Ainu heritage who works to promote Ainu culture in Japan and around the world, as well as Dr. Vince Okada, Assistant Professor of Social Work at the Hawai’i Pacific University, who assisted with translation for the episode. 

We explore Maya’s journey to becoming an advocate and teacher of Ainu culture, her reflections on her identity, intergenerational partnership through sharing and passing down local knowledge, as well as the importance of mutual respect, or uaynukor in Ainu.

ウアイヌコㇿ: アイヌ視点からの環境保全活動 (S07 E10)

The eARThumanities: Reimagining Net-Zero project at NYU Abu Dhabi is an initiative that proposes a dynamic way of thinking about a new just and inclusive development paradigm for a net-zero world.

The US and Europe alone are responsible for over 65% of global cumulative greenhouse gas emissions yet the impacts of the climate crisis are felt the most in the regions that contributed the least to global heating. There is also a generational dimension to this injustice, where the future generation will not only face the worst of the climate crisis but also be deprived of a carbon budget that enabled past generations to achieve the current standard of living. It is not obvious that the current conversation around the transition to a net-zero world as it is being charted today will help to address all of these injustices. Intentional design of decarbonsation and net-zero pathways that take into account climate and intergenerational justice is necessary to build foundations for an equitable, inclusive, resilient and a sustainable future.

Beatriz Garcia is an environmental lawyer and nationally accredited mediator. Her research interests include international environmental law and dispute resolution. Her research has been published by Cambridge University Press and international journals such as Oxford's Journal of Environmental Law, Ecosystem Services, and Review of European, Comparative & International Environmental Law, among others. She has recently received a grant from UNESCO to develop a comparative law study on biosphere reserve zonation in the Asia Pacific region. She has worked for Forests Alive, a carbon markets company based in Sydney, and also for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. She has conducted consultancy work for various United Nations' agencies and environmental NGOs.

Omnia El Omrani, COP27 Youth Envoy
Omnia El Omrani is the first Youth Envoy to the President of the UN 27th Climate Change Conference (COP27) and a medical doctor at Ain Shams University Hospital, a member of the Youth Sounding Board of the European Commission, and a Commissioner at the Lancet-Chatham House Commission on Post-COVID Planetary Health. Omnia served IFMSA for six years as National Public Officer, MENA Focal Point, and Liaison Officer for Public Health Issues representing more than 1.3 million medical students leading their global advocacy and policy work on climate change with the UNFCCC, UNEP, and WHO.

Keynote: Alice Twemlow, Climate Justice Imaginaries Beyond the International Reference Meridian

Interview with Patrick Kabera, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Rwanda, on the role of the Green Climate Fund for developing countries in the global climate finance architecture.

Ahead of this week’s annual World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings in Marrakesh, the German government hosted last Thursday a high-level international replenishment conference in Bonn to mobilize financial commitments for the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Established in 2015, the fund is a critical element of the Paris Agreement to support developing countries in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. At the Bonn summit, 25 nations pledged about $9.3 billion for the 2024-2027 programming period. GCF hopes for contributions from more countries in the coming weeks on the road to the COP28 climate conference in Dubai.

In 2016, Rwanda was the first country to get access to the fund and so far completed ten projects in partnership with the GCF, receiving a total of $127 million, to accelerate the national climate adaptation capacity and green transition.

According to Kabera his country and the GCF have grown together in the process: “Countries like Rwanda, that are not major contributors of emissions, are equally committed to play our part to build a climate-resilient world.”

Earlier in September, the Government of Kenya and the African Union co-hosted the inaugural UN Africa Climate Summit to discuss sustainable solutions to global climate challenges under the theme "Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World." The summit culminated in the Nairobi Declaration, backed by the leaders of the continent’s 54 countries, that calls on the world's biggest emitters and richest countries to keep their promises, in particular the unfilled pledge of $100 billion in annual climate finance to developing nations, and to rally behind a global carbon tax on fossil fuels, aviation and maritime transport.

Says Kabera: “The Nairobi declaration is a demonstration of the political will of our governments towards real climate action, but also a call for a reform in the global financial architecture. In order to unlock Africa’s growth and transformation, we need to invest in renewable energies, in green job creation for our population. We need to transform agriculture, adapt to climate change in core sectors like transport.”

Climate finance to developing countries is currently largely provided in the form of loans (71%) - and only 26% provided as grants.

In this instalment of Grounded Conversations, political theorist Alyssa Battistoni joins Sydney Environment Institute researcher Anna Sturman to discuss the practical transformation of unjust systems in relation to climate change and critical scholarship. They will reflect on the role of care and multispecies justice in climate movements, and the different social and political contexts the USA and Australia present for organising towards more just futures.

Building power within and beyond the university

In her climate story, Areej describes experiencing effects from heatwaves, floods, and droughts. She explains that people in Pakistan are experiencing adverse climate change impacts even though they have contributed comparatively little to the problem. She calls on the global community to work on reducing the use of greenhouse gasses to achieve climate justice.

Episode 30: Kate Brelje interviews Osprey Orielle Lake

The evolution of plants has been so successful that today they account for the majority of living biomass on Earth. Humans, along with all other animals, exist thanks to plants, and we can continue to exist only in relationship to them. Plants are all around us, but we tend to overlook their importance in our everyday lives. Plants are essential not only to every breath we take, but also to our food, medicine, shelter, and clothing. Still, most of us walk through life and ‘nature’ without recognizing plants as the beings shaping the planet.

The Vegetal Turn
Given the magnitude of challenges facing the Earth, recent years have seen a renewed and growing attention to plant life across the humanities as well as in the social and natural sciences. This Vegetal Turn is generating transdisciplinary conversations within and beyond academia that seek to create awareness of plant lives and stories and that pursue respectful relationships with plant beings by advancing an ethics of care. How can we better understand the role and agency of plants in shaping on Earth? What does respect mean when engaging with a forest, a field, an orchard, or a potted plant? How do we advance a transition from thinking to acting, from research to practice, in our connection with plants?

What actions are now needed?
We believe that the current challenges of the Anthropocene offer a compelling and urgent opportunity to advance a movement for thinking and engaging differently with plants as well as for increased allyship and exchange between researchers, practitioners, educators, and activists. Networking with Plants in the Anthropocene is a newly created network for those involved in research, education, and advocacy for human-plant relationships of care and reciprocity, and a collaboration between the Consortium of Environmental Philosophers, The Plant Initiative, the Literary and Cultural Plant Studies Network, the Eternal Forest project, and other groups. We invite connections with additional existing and incipient networks and communities concerned with plants and ethical plant-human relationships to carry out multidisciplinary projects. Such a “polyculture of ideas” will bring together Indigenous and non-Indigenous science, literature, philosophy, poetry, art, anthropology, education, botany, and environmental activism.

What do we do?
Networking with Plants in the Anthropocene aims to create and offer tools, content, and methods for transdisciplinary and transgenerational environmental education engaging with the Vegetal Turn that isinternational but locally grounded. The network collaborates to advance outreach and education for the general public through books, conferences, videos, podcasts, and other educational materials, both online and in person. Networking with Plants in the Anthropocene is built on a foundation that is respectful of Indigenous and local botanical knowledges, contemporary scientific discoveries, and world philosophies and literatures. We support generative ways to cultivate educational pathways through art, stories, songs, ceremonies, and individual experiences as well as opportunities for collaborative action.

WURD Radio is the only African-American owned and operated talk radio station in Pennsylvania, and one of few in the country. Taking a multimedia approach – on-air, online and in the community – WURD is widely recognized as the pulse of the African-American community locally, regionally, and nationally. From mayoral races to presidential elections, from the street corner to the corner suite, WURD has tackled the hard issues as an influential, respected and powerful voice in the marketplace.

Climate Stories Project (CSP) is an educational and artistic forum for sharing personal stories about the effects of climate change on our lives and communities. CSP focuses on personal oral histories, which bring an immediacy to the sometimes abstract nature of climate change communication. Some of us may recount dramatic events such as floods and wildfires, or we may address our observations of changes in seasonal patterns and our fears for the future of our families and communities. We may discuss how climate change is forcing our communities to adapt to extreme weather and sea level rise. Or we may speak about how we are getting involved in the movement to fight the fossil fuel industry through community organizing or nonviolent protest.There is no "right" way to talk about climate change, as it is a vast topic that is increasingly touching every corner of our lives. CSP also facilitates educational workshops where students learn to speak about their own responses to climate change and interview guest speakers about theirs. In addition, some climate stories are featured in music and soundscape projects that allow audiences to witness the effects of climate change in a novel way.
