Historical background
Charlie Parker penned “Au Privave” in 1951 during his celebrated Swedish Schnapps sessions. Unlike many of Bird’s whirlwind contrafacts, it’s a 12-bar major blues whose playful title (a phonetic nod to the French “à vous privez”) masks a labyrinth of bebop twists. The tune quickly became a jam-session favorite—its singable head inviting newcomers while the harmonic detours kept veterans on their toes.

About this trio arrangement

Instrumentation – nylon-string guitar (melody & chord-melody), upright bass, and brush-kit drums; the score lists only Bass, Drums, and a second Guitar part—no keys or pads this time.

Tempo & feel – a bright ≈ 144 BPM four-to-the-bar swing preserves Parker’s bop bounce without racing past the guitar’s warm articulation. 

Key & harmony – set in D major (two sharps); Parker’s original F-blues has been transposed down a minor third for the ensemble, with the guitar notated an octave higher ( ‹chromatic -12› ) so it sounds in the rich lower register. The chorus opens D Maj7 → Bm7 → E 9 → A 13♭9, hinting at rhythm-changes substitutions before settling back to D Maj7. 


Texture & solos – the guitar presents the head in crisp, three-note clusters; the bass walks buoyant quarters while brushes skate on ride and snare rims. A single-chorus guitar solo explores bebop enclosures and upper-structure tensions (♯11, 13). The out-chorus adds Charleston-style hits before resolving on a ringing D 6/9—a sunny wink at the tune’s major-blues roots.
