FEATURED on Hulu's "Your Attention Please"
A Mix of R&B, Pop Music, and Soul with just a touch of gospel on the end there. My goal was to write a song that expressed by staunch unwillingness to only present parts of myself; a celebration of intersectionality. It's the anthem of anyone who's done with codeswitching.
The music was a collaborative effort with my incredibly talented band 24-7 (Stefie Dominguez on Cajon, Rachel Francis on Acoustic, and Dr. Sammy on vocals)

This track displays a raw experience on codeswitching, the Black Vernacular, Biracial Identity, and the idea of post-Blackness where there is understanding that the Black Identity is expressed in many ways more than stereotypical and boxed in Blackness.

Episode 15- Codeswitching

In the first segment, Jenn and Daren read a listener submitted question (the topic of this episode) and clarify that this question speaks to a larger question of the power of the status quo.

In the second segment, they discuss the theoretical implications of being liked and supported by white people.

In the third segment, Jenn and Daren discuss not doing things for the white gaze, codeswitching, and creating spaces for Black folx first.

-About Daren and Jenn-

Jenn is a queer, Black feminist from Oakland. Daren is an introverted nerd and novelist from Anaheim.

They are boo’ed up and have been since 2002 when they bonded over a mutual love of Brian McKnight’s “Never Felt This Way”, their favorite Brandy lyrics, and nineties TV like Family Matters, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and Living Single. It was a shared obsession with Black cultural icons, histories, and artistry that drew Jenn and Daren to one another even though they are actually completely different personality-wise.

Jenn and Daren have always said to themselves, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a show?” Well, no major networks have reached out yet. So, until that happens, you can find the them here, sharing their views on race and culture and everything in between.

They are young thirty-somethings who have been married since for over a decade. Jenn and Daren have three beautiful, brilliant, radical, snarky kids who play no games.

HAKLOUD.art a newborn indie record label based out the Pacific Norwest out of Seatlle in mid-cascadia.  A gem of the tech and art scene being birthed.  A true cross-generational effort of art and tech.  Be Chill, Heal on Others.  Live Fast, Die Sloe.  Prosper, HAKLOUD. We do Art.

Steven Michalove is a native of Atlanta Ga, that lives and writes in near Seattle.  He is a stroke survivor and was gifted the keyboards playing by his brain damage.
