Marcelo Claure is a Bolivian tech entrepreneur who founded Brightstar which was later sold to Sprint after they reached $10 billion in revenue, becoming the largest Hispanic-owned business in US history. Currently, Claure serves as Chief Executive Officer of SoftBank Group International and Chief Operating Officer of SoftBank Group Corp. 

Claure oversees the vast portfolio of the Group’s operating companies, including Arm, WeWork, Brightstar, Fortress, SB Energy, Boston Dynamics, among others, along with SoftBank’s ownership in T-Mobile US. He also runs Club Bolivar, Bolivia’s most popular and successful soccer team, and is Chairman and Owner of Club Internacional de Futbol Miami (Miami Beckham United).

Eigentlich wollte Julia Heidinger aus Hamburg Journalistin werden und steckte vor einiger Zeit noch mitten im Studium der Medien und Information. Als Studienaufgabe musste sie aber irgendwann eine Webseite bauen und das machte ihr so viel Spaß, dass sie letztendlich das Studium schmiss und sich für einen ganz anderen Weg entschied.

Schon beim Bau ihrer ersten eigenen Webseite bemerkte Julia, dass die Webentwicklung unendlich viele Möglichkeiten lieferte, sich kreativ auszutoben. In ihrer Freizeit baute sie dann für Familie und Freunde hobbymäßig Webseiten. Weil ihr das Coden und Gestalten so gut gefiel, fing sie als Werksstudentin für Frontend-Entwicklung im E-Commerce-Unternehmen „About You“ an, das damals noch ein kleines Start-Up war. Danach war für Julia klar, dass die IT ihre Zukunft sein soll und sie begann ein Informatik-Studium. Nach einem Jahr an der Uni stand für Julia aber fest, dass ihr das Lernen zu theoretisch war und sie lieber wieder zurück in die Praxis wollte. Genau in diesem Moment stieß sie auf eine Anzeige für ein Bootcamp beim Unternehmen „Neue Fische“ in Hamburg, meldete sich dort an und ließ sich im Schnelldurchlauf zur Webentwicklerin ausbilden.

 

Dann ging alles viel schneller als erwartet und nur vier Monate später startete sie schon in ihren ersten festen Job als Frontend-Entwicklerin. Bei all diesen Schritten hatte Julia immer die volle Unterstützung der IT-Community. Ihre Erfolge und Misserfolge teilte sie nämlich regelmäßig in den sozialen Medien und bekam reichlich Feedback, Lob und konstruktive Kritik aus aller Welt. „Mir war nicht bewusst, wie positiv und cool die Entwickler-Community ist. Die Leute sind nicht nerdig oder beängstigend. Das sind einfach Leute, die Lust haben, coole Sachen zu bauen.“, sagt sie in der neuesten Folge unseres Podcasts „New Devs on the Block.“ Aus dieser Liebe zur Community resultierte dann auch ihr neuestes Projekt.

 

Julia ist Mitgründerin des Social Developers Club. Der Club soll ein internationales Netzwerk für alle Menschen im IT-Bereich und technikbegeisterte Menschen sein. Ihr Ziel ist es, die Community untereinander zu vernetzen, für frischen Input zu sorgen und währenddessen Diversität und Inklusion in der IT zu fördern. Für ihr Engangement erhielt sie nun, gemeinsam mit ihrem Team, den Idea-Preis der Stadt Hamburg, der Projekte ehrt, die sich für digitale Gerechtigkeit einsetzen. Julias Schritt in die IT-Welt war für sie ganz offensichtlich genau die richtige Entscheidung.

 

Für alle, die sich noch nicht sicher sind, ob die IT-Branche etwas für sie ist und die sich schon ein bisschen mit der Materie beschäftigt haben, hat Julia einen Rat. Sie empfiehlt, genau wie sie damals, die kleinen Fortschritte in den sozialen Medien zu posten. Die Community wird darauf bestimmt reagieren und unterstützend zur Seite stehen. Mithilfe dieses positiven Feedbacks wird der Schritt in die IT oder ins Bootcamp deutlich leichter. „Der Input der Community hat mich in meiner Entscheidung bestärkt, das Studium abzubrechen und ins Bootcamp zu gehen. Traut euch den Schritt nach draußen zu gehen. Die Hilfe, die ihr von der Community bekommt, ist sehr wertvoll und die Motivation von anderen pusht mich heute noch ständig.“

In the Appalachia region of the U.S., a region once dominated by the coal industry, mines have continued to close one after another. In answer, two tech consultants have established a free coding bootcamp called Mined Minds to retrain out of work coal miners and others for work in tech. What they promise seems like it could improve the socioeconomic status of communities around the world. 

But some believe they aren’t as beneficial as they come off. Several ex-learners have criticized the bootcamp, saying they were promised employment upon completion of the program and were fired days later. Others have filed a class action lawsuit against them on charges of fraud. Code Burst investigates Mined Minds, their efficacy, and whether their model can work for others.
