A few weeks ago, when releasing volume 072 of our regular series with Martina's help, we briefly mentioned one of our favorite mix series. What we didn't tell you is that they're also a very solid record label specialized in electro, IDM, ambient, and techno, with almost six years of existence. We love supporting all those quality projects and artists from our country, and especially from our city, Madrid. Hence, we proudly welcome Noise To Meet You, and the minds running it.

For our next release of 2024 Command D, the dynamic Australian artist residing on Gadigal land, returns to Pure Space with his next EP, "New Devices."

"New Devices" is a testament to resilience and innovation, instigated by the theft of his laptop and loss of production files in motion. The need to start the EP journey afresh led to a subsequent shift in his music production methods. As Command D explains, "The tracks came from the production of my first live set and are a representation of my workflow during this time. Most elements were made using a more hands-on/'live take' approach."

Opening the EP, "Swallow" captivates with its low slung bass and swirling percussion. Let the dubbed out synthesis warm you as you drift into the abyss, with the four to the floor beat keeping you grounded through the dance.

Next up is "Madman," a heady and energising cut that continues Command D’s exploration into deep dance grooves. The staunch synthesis keeps your head down until the dub chords lift you up. One fitting for sunrise or sunset, up to you really..

"CG Phrase" introduces more intensity released only as the swirling atmospheres lift. The track toys with tension as it pulls you deeper into the sonic vortex.

The EP culminates with "Heavy Clouds," a cathartic and heavenly composition that offers a moment of introspective rapture. Its ethereal melodies and soothing rhythms provide a serene contrast to the preceding tracks, closing the EP on a contemplative note.

Command D's exploration into new generation dub techno continues to evolve, with "New Devices" pushing the boundaries of his production ever-onwards. His style, characterised by sonically rich and murky tones and meticulous attention to detail, remains a hallmark of his work; an auditory journey that is both captivating and transformative. Bliss out.

Premiere: Command D - Madman

They hung thick and ominous overhead, casting strange shapes and shadows upon the empty fields and plains which lay beneath. The barley could be seen blowing in the warmth of the summer breeze but it was a muggy, humid kind of heat. The kind which stuck to you and held on tight.

Heavy clouds often meant that the end was nigh, that summer was on its way out and soon the rain would fall and leave this land green and wondrous. Everything would be afloat once again, an aquatic paradise in which the wild things grew and the people danced.

For now, they simply watched as they passed overhead, moving ever more slowly, weighed down by world within them.

Pure Space are set to release a new EP from Command D. This record is titled 'New Devices' and features a collection of dubbed out ambient tones, amidst loosely dotted sporadic percussion in the ilk of Basic Channel or Deepchord etc.

Command D summons the gods of the deep to have us completely submerged in a world of interdimensional dub techno, traversing us through an hour and a half of infinitely looped reflections and subaquatic soundscapes.

Q. This certainly feels like one of your most immersive mixes to date, deeply contemplative and full of dreamy dub techno atmospherics. What inspiration did you draw upon, and what type of setting or situation could you imagine it being enjoyed in? 

A. I started to get into this sound when I was putting together my mix for the Moonshoe mix series. I didn’t know what to call it at the time but I found all of those tunes and tied them together with a certain feeling that was really inspiring me then, it was very organic and that is still one of my favourite mixes. You can hear dub elements scattered throughout that whole mix.

As I started incorporating more dub elements into my productions I discovered artists like Stephen Hitchell and Rhythm & Sound that had created a kind of music that was really extremely satisfying for me to listen to, especially considering my developing love for hi-fi and larger sound systems. I incorporated those artists into my FHUO mix which was a much more considered exploration of the style. Looking back on the process of making the mixes and how much I enjoyed them really assures me that the deep and contemplative sound is a big part of who I am.

For this mix I’ve taken inspiration from the MDC series itself which I’ve been listening to for years. I wanted to add little hints of deep house sounds as a nod to the mixes of the past. I personally think mixes like this are the best to listen to when you’re travelling and looking out a window, otherwise maybe sitting at a desk on a rainy day doing some work. I’d like people to listen to this in a time where they won't be distracted by something else or feel the need to skip forward, I’d want people to just throw it on and let it play, drifting in and out of the tracks and their own thoughts.

Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your heart, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much?

A. My favourite tracks in the mix are Saftig Komposition by Rasmus Hedlund and Sedlec Ossuary by Persuasion. At a base level I love these tracks because they take a more modern approach to a dub techno track with tight production. Going deeper, the thing that really resonates with me is hard to put into words and best left unsaid. I think this kind of music (along with many other kinds) allows the listener to feel emotions that aren't able to be put into words, part of why I love it so much. I find that dub techno specifically can feel sad and happy at the same time like lots of jazz ballads. That to me is a really beautiful sound that kind of encapsulates life in general.

Q. Tell us about the development of your live set, and where things are currently at with it? Do you feel like you’re able to explore different shades of your sound when playing in a live setting?

A. Putting together my first live set was an awesome experience. I got to play it all around Australia from clubs to rainforests. I’ve put the current live set to bed for now and am starting to work on a new one with a slightly different setup. Although it was a challenging experience, I loved making a live set because often when I would dig for tunes to play out I’d think ‘I wish I had a song like this’ and writing a live set meant that I could bring those ideas to life and curate a set exactly how I wanted. I think I’m really starting to settle into ‘my sound’ in production and DJing, but there are creative limitations in both like finding new music or learning new skills. Overcoming technical barriers in production allows me to get closer to my most true form of expression when it comes to what’s coming out the speakers so I’ve been really working on that recently. Hoping the next live set will be bigger and better : )

Der Pfau und der Kranich - Fabel

Auf einer saftig grünen Wiese stand ein eitler Pfau am Rande eines Teichs. Stundenlang bestaunte er seine eigene Schönheit, die sich kunstvoll im Wasser spiegelte. Völlig selbstverliebt murmelte er: „Was bin ich doch für ein prächtiges Wesen. (...) Niemand sonst ist annähernd so schön wie ich!“ Mit einem lauten Geräusch wurde der eitle Pfau ruckartig aus seinen Gedanken gerissen. Ein Kranich war direkt neben ihm im Teich gelandet und starkste mit langen Schritten durch das Wasser.
„Hey, du hässlicher Vogel! Was machst du hier bloß für einen Lärm?“, schimpfte der Pfau. Doch der Kranich blieb vollkommen unbeirrt und starkste weiter durch den Teich. „Wie siehst du überhaupt aus? Mit deinen grauen Federn, deinen krummen Beinen und deinem furchtbar langen Hals bist du wahrlich keine Schönheit! Erst recht nicht im Vergleich zu mir!“, schrie der Pfau. Als der Kranich das hörte, blieb er stehen und hob langsam den Kopf. Vollkommen verwundert sah er den schimpfenden Pfauen an. (...) Mit einem großen Satz schwang der Kranich sich hinauf in die Lüfte. Er erwiderte: „Du bist ein farbenfroher Vogel und viel bunter und prachtvoller, als ich es bin. Aber weißt du was? Ich kann hoch hinauf in die Lüfte steigen und bis zum Horizont hinausfliegen. Ich kann die Welt von oben betrachten und trage die Freiheit in meinen Flügeln. Du hingegen bist nur ein hübsches Hühnchen und wirst für immer am Boden bleiben!“Plötzlich realisierte der Pfau, wie Unrecht er dem Kranich getan hatte. Schnell versuchte er, sich bei ihm zu entschuldigen, doch der Kranich war bereits auf und davon.

I recorded this mix sitting on the carpet of my partner and I's new home, pulling out some old records and enjoying the comfort of our new living room which now also houses my custom green monitors. Sundays to me have a naturally relaxed and positive vibe and it's the same day that I throw my event 'Park Dub'. The music at Park Dub is generally a mixture of electronic dub tracks and more rootsy dub reggae but I usually tell the DJ's playing that 'anything with enough reverb and delay is fine', haha. I tried to capture the spirit of Park Dub in the mix.

Carrying on from some legendary parties before it, the next generation of ravers held 'plur' true to it's og meaning. Young Harry (Peanut) and I had been mixing together and talking about tunes we loved for months leading up to the event. We played in the side room while the morning light slowly poured in, all the homies in the front and gun fingers to the back. Big party mode with some blissy ones, freedom while it lasted, and a fun one to listen back to. Big thanks to everyone who hosted and the dancers!

Bertha not only inspires the people around her with her positive energy and penchant for creativity on the dance floor but also on the decks. With her feeling for the music and the vibe in the room, the Hamburg native develops an atmosphere of a pleasant get-together and leads those who love dancing into a world of the fantastic. She herself describes her sound geographically: early education in Hamburg, teenage years in MV, garnished with Berlin and Leipzig sprinkles. Bertha plays whatever moves her heart. True to the motto “Gets in your ear. Stays in your head.”
