The second episode of Catalyzing Computing features an interview of CCC Council Member Suresh Venkatasubramanian. Suresh is a professor at the University of Utah with a background in algorithms and computational geometry, as well as data mining and machine learning. Suresh talks about joining the CCC, the work of the CCC’s Fairness and Accountability task force, and the impact of the internet and algorithms on the modern world.

What led up to StartEngine?


-Already knew about AdTech and Machine Learning

-Hooked up with a mentor who drove direction of product and helped out a lot

-Got so much out of the relationship that his company moved down to Orange County to partner with his mentor’s company

-Liked working at a startup because he retains more control that at a larger company.

-Likes partnership with a larger company was a great situation.


Why did you apply to SE?

-Nic moved from NY to California because cofounder Vikaas Sharma (co-founder) approached him to do a startup (TTYNow) and they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area.

-TTYNow idea didn’t get traction, so they decided to pivot their skillset.

-Applied to SE and connected with Howard, who encouraged them to do AdTech and the StartEngine Entrepreneur-In-Residence (EIR) Program.

-Took 1 month to explore their idea before committing to a niche.     

Failure/Pivot:

-During exploration Nic wanted to build an ad exchange, but that was too complicated for now.

-He decided to do a demand-side platform in a less crowded space.

Hardest Decision:

-Quitting his job on Wall Street and giving up his group of friends, girlfriend, loved ones to do a startup.

-When did you realize you can do this?

-Going to AdTech conference and discussing acquisitions … after only 6 months of working on the project.   (Not ready to exit, btw!)

What Did I Forget to Ask?

Who are your cofounders?  
-Damien, Vikaas, Khayed

-Damien - UCLA PhD student after Graduating Columbia

-Came to a crossroads -- will I stay in academia or go over to industry?   Hard decision, just like Nic’s. 

-Vikaas - Had as hard or harder decision than Nic’s

What’s your company culture?

-Results focused company culture. Incorporates new team members into existing social group as well as team.

-Other than that, take it easy and enjoy Orange County’s 290 days/yr of sun.  

-Most important consideration when choosing an accelerator?

-What industry are you in?
-Location?
-Where will you get most valuable connections?
-Who are advisors for the program?  Mentors?

-Forget about term sheets, focus on connections.
