In Congo moeten bedrijven die daar naar bijzondere aardmetalen delven, een percentage van de omzet afstaan aan het land. Zo kunnen scholen en ziekenhuizen worden gebouwd en ziet de bevolking iets terug van de miljardenwinsten. Recent bleek dat meerdere mijnbouwbedrijven deze regel aan hun laars proberen te lappen. Het lijkt een ver-van-ons-bed-show, maar dat is het niet, want een van die bedrijven is gevestigd in Amsterdam. Lukas Kotkamp vertelt over deze cruciale wereldhandel, waarbij onder meer Nederland, Kazachstan, Hongkong en Congo zijn betrokken.

Wie bijzondere aardmetalen komt winnen in Congo, moet een deel van de omzet afstaan aan de Congolese staat. Zo ziet de bevolking iets terug van de miljardenwinsten. Maar meerdere mijnbouwbedrijven proberen deze regel te omzeilen. Een van die bedrijven is gevestigd in Amsterdam. Journalist Lukas Kotkamp legt uit hoe dat zit.

Loufoukieto – The Warrior Who Defeated the Giant
In ancient times, when drums spoke to the spirits and trees whispered secrets to the wind, the people of M'Banza lived under the shadow of fear. From the northern mountains descended Foutouka, a giant with skin like burnt bark and eyes that glowed like embers. Every new moon, his step shook the earth, and his voice drowned out the children's songs.
Foutouka wasn't just strength: he was arrogance, he was hunger. He stole crops, destroyed huts, and demanded blood tribute. No one could face him. Until Loufoukieto, a young hunter with a serene gaze and an indomitable heart, rose up.
He wasn't the strongest, nor the tallest. But Loufoukieto knew the ways of the forest, the signs of the sky, and the stories the elders told by the fire. With his nkula wood spear and a necklace of leopard teeth, he entered the mountain where the giant slept.
For three days and three nights, Loufoukieto studied Foutouka. He observed how he moved, how he slept, how he raged. And then, he hatched his plan.
When the giant awoke, Loufoukieto challenged him with words, not weapons. He told him of a treasure hidden in the jungle, of a power greater than his own. Foutouka, vain, followed the warrior. But Loufoukieto led him to the Cave of Echoes, where the sounds multiplied and confused. There, the giant became lost in his own fury, striking shadows and screaming.
Loufoukieto cunningly made rocks fall on the entrance. The giant was trapped, roaring until his voice became the wind.
Since that day, the people of M'Banza sing his name in ceremonies. Loufoukieto not only defeated the giant: he defeated fear. His story is told in drums, in dances, in tattoos on the skin of warriors.

Nigeria’s dream of reaching the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico ended on Sunday in an agonising 4-3 penalty shootout defeat against DR Congo in the final of the African play-off in Rabat, Morocco. Both countries were seeking a spot at the inter-continental play-off after coming through the battle of the best second-placed teams from the qualifying series. Frank Onyeka put Nigeria ahead in the third minute before Meschack Elia equalized for the Congolese in the 32nd minute. DR Congo would go on to advance to the Intercontinental playoff in march 4-3 via a penalty shootout.

A deep dive into the hypnotic, fuzzy distortions of Bantu sonic cosmology, including Luba drums (mukupele) & xylophones (madimba) and Bazombo electrified likembé (thumb piano) music.

The Luba and other ethnic groups in the region play drums and xylophones made of tuned wooden bars supported on a frame, with calabash gourds attached underneath as resonators. The mirlitons (buzzing membranes) inside the gourds add a characteristic nasal buzz to the sound. The mirliton is created by drilling a small hole in the side of each calabash and inserting a short hollow tube or rod. Inside this tube, a thin, translucent film, harvested from the egg sac (or "nest") of the ntanda nkumbidi spider, is affixed. This spider silk membrane vibrates when the bars are struck, producing the buzzing effect. The electrified likembé is a modern variation of the same aesthetic. Buzzing timbres are used to enhance and accentuate the rhythms, create "ghost melodies" and disguise or distort sounds to embody otherworldly presences during rituals, masquerades, or funerals.
