Many patients in Bangladesh face breathing problems. COPD, asthma, pneumonia, and COVID-19 are some of the most common causes. For them, oxygen therapy becomes a lifesaver. Let’s break it down in simple terms. 
How Does an Oxygen Concentrator Work? 1. Air Is Pulled In from the Room: The concentrator starts by pulling in normal air from the surroundings. This air is made up of: 78% nitrogen,  21% oxygen, 1% other gases.  This air is not enough for people with breathing problems. So, the machine needs to filter it and make it richer in oxygen.
2. Air Passes Through a Dust Filter: Before doing anything else, the air goes through a dust filter. This removes particles like smoke, dirt, and allergens. Clean air is important for safe breathing, especially for patients with asthma or COPD. Some machines also have antibacterial filters to kill germs.
3. Air Moves into the Compressor: The filtered air is then sucked into a small compressor inside the machine. The compressor squeezes the air and increases the pressure. This makes it easier to separate oxygen from other gases. The pressurized air is now ready for the next step: nitrogen removal.
4. Nitrogen Is Removed Using Zeolite: Here’s where the magic happens. The machine pushes the compressed air into two canisters filled with a special material called zeolite.
Zeolite is a mineral with a unique ability. It traps nitrogen molecules and lets oxygen pass through. This process is called Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA).
5. Pure Oxygen Is Sent to the Patient: The oxygen collected from both canisters is now around 90% to 95% pure. This is safe and effective for medical use.
The oxygen flows through a humidifier bottle (optional) to add moisture and prevent dryness in the nose or throat. A nasal cannula or oxygen mask, which delivers oxygen to the patient
The flow rate (1–10 liters per minute) depends on the model and the patient’s need. The doctor sets this.
6. Cycle Repeats Automatically: Once the process starts, it keeps going without stopping. The machine keeps drawing air, filtering it, removing nitrogen, and giving out clean oxygen. As long as the machine is plugged in and maintained well, it keeps working.
7. Some units have alarms and display panels: oxygen purity sensors, flow rate control knobs, low oxygen or power failure alarms, and LED displays showing hours of use and errors. These features help caregivers ensure the machine is working properly.

Who Should Use an Oxygen Concentrator? Your oxygen saturation (SpO2) is below 90%. You have long-term lung problems. You feel breathless during rest or sleep. You are recovering from pneumonia or COVID. Always use it under medical supervision.
