While working as a coral reef biologist in Panama in 1989, Nancy Knowlton and her young daughter are taken into the custody of the Panamanian military when the U.S. invades.

Nancy Knowlton has been a scientist with the Smithsonian since 1984 and is now a scientist emerita, first in Panama and most recently at the National Museum of Natural History in DC. She’s also been a professor at Yale and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where she founded the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation. Her work on coral reefs has taken her literally around the world, and she has spent so much time underwater that she long ago lost count of the hours. She has been a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the author of Citizens of the Sea, and was the Editor-in-Chief of the Ocean Portal website. The original composition "Reef Recall" by Dr. Heather Spence explores ocean soundscapes, with her cello as a tour guide. These movements were recorded by Dr. Mark Ballora RIP at a live performance in 2018 at the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum.

In this REMIX, Heather further explores the sampling methodology we used on the Mesoamerican Reef by replicating it to sample her own composition "Reef Recall". Mark Ballora's wife, Agatha Wang, adds layers of meaning with her flute.

This is a short extract of a longer recording of an Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) at Nirvana Sur, off the southern coast of the island of San Andres (Caribbean Colombia). Acropora palmata is an important reef-building coral in the Caribbean.

The fish spotted around that coral were Acanthurus bahianus (Cirujanos / Surgeonfish); Sparisoma viride (Loro brilloso / Stoplight parrotfish) and Chaetodon capistratus (Pez mariposa de cuatro ojos / Foureye butterflyfish)

“Coral Reef” is the emotional low point of BlueScarf’s debut album “Weightless In-Between”. It represents a struggle between daydreams and reality, teetering on the edge of life and death.
As the narrator drifts through the sea, his body comes to rest at the coral reef. He feels weak, so the reef tries to lull him into death with its hypnotic choir. He is tired. Ashamed of his life. Slowly, he begins to give in.

Weightless In-Between

This audio documentary is a love story with the Ocean, the reef and its guardians. An invitation to travel to Caribbean shores to immerse yourself in the lived experiences of coastal communities, and in the sounds of the local ecosystems: the coral reefs and the mangroves.

You will hear stories from Raizal fishermen, turning their ignorance for corals into love, respect and admiration, and learn about the work of the female marine biologists of the Blue Indigo Foundation to restore and heal corals.

Together, they share about their dreams for the future of the reef, the challenges they face with global warming, climate change and extreme weather events, and the hopes of marine and coastal ecosystem regeneration after the recent hurricanes.

Take a moment to relax, remember that every other breath you take comes from the ocean, and enjoy the ride. Best enjoyed on headphones, or loud speakers with a quiet environment - and ideally, with others as a collective listening journey.

The sounds and interviews were recorded in the Archipelago of San Andres, Providence and Santa Catalina in November 2024. With deep thanks to the Blue Indigo Foundation team and to my interviewees: Pedro, Laura, Yanelis, Ruben, Camilo, Casimiro and Josselyn. The recordings of the reefs and the mangroves were taken with the Aquarian audio hydrophone.

Kiss Bálint Béla, also known as BlueScarf is a Hungarian writer, independent singer-songwriter, producer, filmmaker & creative individual from Bratislava, Slovakia. BlueScarf started making music in his high school years in an attempt to combat his fears and face the inevitable end of childhood. With his genre-bending style and honest, transparent voice he creates about the metaphorical, as well as the painfully raw and real.

BlueScarf’s debut album, “Weightless In-Between”, is a metaphorical coming-of-age story – an introspective voyage across the sea toward a deserted island, where the narrator confronts his deepest fears and must find the strength to overcome them to survive.

His debut single, “Suffocating”, takes its listeners to a place of quiet despair and sheer panic, mashing soft, melancholic piano with agressive drums and grungy electric guitars in the midst of a thunderstorm.

The follow-up, “Goldfish” is a radical departure from the tone set by its predecessor. It sounds fun, upbeat, but beyond its innocence there lies unexpressed fear and indecision.

“Lonely Island of Mine”, the last single before his narrative album is about second chances. Trial and error. Embracing mistakes and being patient with ourselves. It is gritty, real, but uplifting at the same time, merging elements of rap and rock with heavy screams.
