This week we payed tribute to CAT. CAT was Prince's dancer and vocalist during the Sign O The Times era of 87 and the Lovesexy era in 88. Anyone who has seen her perform during those times will know how important she was and how much energy she always brought to the show! Quite unique, especially in 1987 and 1988. 

I was fortunate enough to speak with her back in 2011. We discussed the origins of house music and when she first started hearing it in night clubs in London where she was living at the time with Seal and Tim (Bomb Da Bass) Simenon. Some incredible stories from a legend!!  RIP CAT.

An extract from Give Him a Little Earth (Cornwall National Landscape 2024) is a ‘long story’ by Gareth Rees imagining the possible lives of a human skeleton excavated from the clifftop overlooking Newtrain Bay, Trevone, Cornwall. A man who lived at some point between 1580 and 1790.

'Four spirits assemble on a clifftop in Trevone, Cornwall to witness the excavation of a grave site. Each, wishing to stake a claim to the bones within, has a story to tell.'

Give Him a Little Earth (extract)

On December 19, 1981, the RNLI lifeboat Solomon Browne sank whilst trying to rescue the crew of the Union Star, a coaster in distress off the coast of Cornwall. All eight lifeboat crew members and eight of the Union Star crew perished in the storm.

There were two brothers in the crew of the lifeboat, but the captain would only allow one of them aboard. He knew they were not coming back.

This song is for all souls lost at sea.

Out To Sea

In Sennen Cove in the far west of Cornwall a pub barmaid reported the local smugglers to the King's guard. As punishment the community took her down below the tide line and pegged her to the beach. She drowned fighting her shackles as the tide came in and covered her.

Over a hundred years later she still haunts the pub.

The Smuggler's Wife

The north coast of Cornwall and Devon is notorious for its jagged shore and its treacherous hidden rocks. The shipwrecks were frequent and the wreckers took advantage of it. They lured ships onto the rocks to plunder their cargo. There was no pity here.

Out of Cornwall , England...

Vincent became interested in mixing/DJing back in the 80s when he first heard a street sounds hip hop electro album and wondered how they managed to join the individual tracks up so seamlessly.

Having collected vinyl his whole life he bought a mixer in 1989 (no easy thing in Cornwall back then) and started trying to beat match on his father’s turntables.

Vincent got his own Technics 1210s mk2 in the early 90s and after some practice, he was soon playing house, hardcore and techno at parties across the Southwest under the name of DJ Cutting Edge.

Jungle and Drum and Bass seemed to be the next step. After listening to LTJ Bukem’s first essential mix in 1995 he really started to follow the Intelligent Drum and Bass sound.

Today, Vincent can be found playing Liquid and Liquid Funk tunes, delighting crowds across the Southwest with some nice a-men break business and sweet turntablism out of love for the old school. From time to time he can be found dropping a Jungle set somewhere in Cornwall as well as various House nights.
