"We've never known what we're doing." Brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence talk about fame, inadvertently ending up on the pop charts and their new album, Alchemy.

Many listeners of this podcast likely associate Disclosure—AKA brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence—with the hits that shot them into the spotlight as teenagers. These had a good deal of crossover success, and the Lawrence brothers went on to have an extremely active touring career and secure multiple Grammy Award nominations.

But there’s much more in their brothers' creative arsenal than meets the eye, as demonstrated in their newest dance music LP, Alchemy, which came out quietly this summer. The duo released their fourth studio album under the pretence that they wanted to move away from some of the big tunes that defined the first part of their career. They did no marketing or PR, choosing to self-release and share the word via announcements on their social media pages. Alchemy is full of beautiful melodic interludes, field recordings and oblique references to the personal experiences that shaped the making of the songs—it was composed during a moment of intense heartbreak and upheaval for Howard, a narrative that weaves its way through the album. "These songs are about feeling lost and looking for love," they explain.

The brothers go deep with Chloe Lula about this period of Howard's life, talking about writing music based on intuition and how they lean on each other for creative and personal support. They also share the strategy behind their rise to success, including how they've navigated record label contracts, visually finessed their performances to appear more like live bands, exchanged EPs for page follows and started a Discord server to connect directly with their fans. "The road is incredible but has a lot of pitfalls." The fabric resident discusses striking the balance between DJing and production, the challenges of a life on tour and choosing to stick out.

Daniel Avery wasn't expecting to make it big. Born in the seaside town of Bournemouth, his early musical diet consisted of shoegaze, post-punk, electroclash and indie rock; he was a die hard fan in attendance at every local live show. But when he moved to London, he was introduced to dance music and became immersed in nightlife, meeting artists like Erol Alkan and Andrew Weatherall who were using the sounds of guitar bands with techno and electronic music for the dance floor. Soon Daniel was working out of a studio next to Weatherall's—who became his longtime mentor—and started warming up the dance floor at fabric on a regular basis. His debut album, Drone Logic, was released to critical acclaim in 2013, and has been followed by six more full-lengths and a number of EPs and singles since. 

In this episode of the RA Exchange, Avery reflects on the shock of being catapulted into the limelight after Drone Logic's unexpected success, and the ongoing struggle he's contended with as he's taken on a full-time touring schedule as a DJ. He also touches on his eclectic range of influences and how he's integrated them in his forthcoming album and newly revitalised fabric party series, Divided Love, which launches on March 2. "The Beatles blew my mind." The LA artist talks about her new album—Something in the Room She Moves—writing music while pregnant and how she works in the studio.

The LA-based composer and musician Julia Holter has garnered a reputation for releases that toe the hazy edge of shoegaze and dream pop, always skirting the contours of the electronic music world. 

On today's RA Exchange, she takes a deep dive into her sixth studio album, Something in the Room She Moves, with music editor Andrew Ryce. Holter talks about writing all but one of the songs while she was pregnant ("Evening Mood" even captures a sample of her child's ultrasound, recorded from her phone), which lends the album a warmth and tenderness unparalleled in any of her past releases. But it's also a somber record; her nephew died while she was recording it, an event that forced her to process the complexity and gravity of two conflicting, converging experiences while composing. 

For the technically inclined, Holter also discusses how she works in the studio and manages post-production. As the artist tells Ryce, she likes to play with resonant frequencies and processing that puts each of the sounds she records into the same sonic world on a record, using effects and composition tricks to give everything what she calls a "sensuous vibe." Nina Perry's BBC Radio 3 composed feature A Song of Bricks and Mortar explores composition, the creative process and the art of making. It takes its inspiration from this quote by Benjamin Britten:

"Composing is like driving down a foggy road toward a house. Slowly you see more details of the house - the colour of the slates and bricks, the shape of the windows. The notes are the bricks and the mortar of the house."

Via a compositional road trip, artists in the process of creating and making give insight into their own personal creative process, and what drives them to create. Like a play within a play or a documentary that documents itself - this feature dips its toe into the infinite and timeless nature of artistic creativity as an integral part of being human.

The fear of new beginnings, the pleasure of being in flow, moments of illumination, and of being lost; the artists' relationship with the environment and their own interior landscapes are revealed by Sculptor Helaine Blumenfeld, Art Student Imran Perretta, Composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Choreographer and Artistic Director of Rambert Dance Company, Mark Baldwin; and a group of people with Dementia and memory problems at a Creative Arts Session run by the Arts development company Verd de gris.

Their insights are woven together with a metaphorical motorbike journey performed by violinist Oli Langford and a soundscape of specially composed music.

The 4th EP from “Orisma” project called “Smile”, with two massive tracks that is taken from the forthcoming Album,“Travel Beyond”.  The first track is great collaboration with “Spinney Lainey” and her magic flute with some vocals from an Indian singer “Dewaan”. The second one is a must dance floor track with powerful grooves and  unique lyrics (produced by Orisma) which were perfectly doing by the pro voice of “Christie Bell”.

Orisma, Dj & Producer currently at Yellow Sunshine Explosion Recordings, born in Greece  on November 1988 in his home town Thessaloniki. From a very young age his  passion for music was born, at the age of  12 he started developing an interest for electronic rhythms. At the age of 15 he had his first experience as a Dj at small events and clubs around is home town. Some years later, as a professional Dj, he starts to study "Music Technology" and started making his own sounds . After experimenting on different kinds of music, he returns to his first and true love, Psy-Trance! In 2013 he started developing  Psy-Trance rhythms and grooves with powerful harmonic progressive melodies, as a result of this an EP called, "Sonnus - Invictus" was born. A year later together with one of his best friends he created a duo side project called, "Psyclists" and released 4 more tracks, powered by Infinity-Tunes records. But the best was still to come, 2015 saw "birth" of his own solo project "ORISMA". 7th August of 2015 the track "Orisma - Lost Reality" was the track that got Orisma to start working with the well recognised label "Yellow Sunshine Explosion Recordings"! Orisma first E.P.(Digital Meditation ) came on 29/04/16 and the 2nd  E.P.(Balance Of The Universe EP) on 02/01/17. One year later mid 2018 the 3rd EP was born  “Alien Light” which reached the Psy-Trance charts for the first time achieving a well noticed position 14 for best releases psytrance releases. The following EP was “Smile” released December 2019 which turned out to be another great success. Mid January 2020 was time for the much anticipated Orisma 1st solo album!  “Travel Beyond”....... response was outstanding and it couldn’t have gone much better Orisma first debut album hits 1st position on Beatport’s Top100 Releases and also Psyshop’s Top 100 charts!!! This was an incredible success!
Few months down the line from his latest release Orisma created a remix contest competition hosted by YSE, with the track “The Truth” taken from “Travel Beyond” album. The competition ended with 4 remixes that were chosen wisely and the  5th Orisma EP “The Truth Remix” was created from that. Orisma 6th and latest EP from was released early September 2020 under the name “New Age” which also hits the 1st place on the top 100 best psytrance releases on beatport.
Along those years of producing  Orisma had the pleasure work on some RMXs or  collaborations with some of the best artists out there (Liquid Soul, Faders, Melicia, E-mov, Mechanimal, Ellinio, Drukverdeler & Bim, Champa, Sirion, Spinney Lainey, Serenity Flux, Quantum Loop and more…)
Orisma has performed for dance-floors all over Europe and his next Step is to take his music to different corners around the world.

Spinney Lainey is Lainey Round from England, progressive psytrance producer and classically-trained flute player and performs her own music with live flute. Her passion for music began at the age of eight, when she began to learn the flute. She came into the world of psytrance production on a mission to express her own efforts to heal from many years of severe chronic illness, transcend suffering and heal spiritually. It is her passion to share her story with others and in doing so, intends through her music, to bring others the hope, light, love, healing and peace that she found, as well as making them dance and be free!

Having graduated with a Classical Music Degree back in 2001, she began composing, improvising, recording and performing music in a wide range of musical styles both with musicians in this country and abroad, forming various musical projects, bands and collaborations and working as a session musician.

During this time, Lainey developed her passion for psytrance and was first discovered after posting a video on Youtube of her busking on her flute to 'Basic' by Zyce at Piccadilly Circus (this can be found on her Youtube channel - link below). The video caused a sensation and went viral. After seeing this video, Zyce asked her to record a flute part for 'Basic' and a remix was made, which can be heard on her soundcloud page. She went on to work with Zyce on 5 tracks in total, including the EP, 'Fluting', which was number 1 on Beatport.

All of Spinney Lainey’s solo releases have performed extremely well and have all reached well into the top 10 in the Beatport charts with New Beginnings reaching no.1.
