Information gathered from Wikipedia;
Released as a single on the 6th May 1983 by Virgin Records, and included on his eighth album, Crises, of the same year.
It has been suggested that the lyrics of the song are a reference to the murder of John Lennon, despite the fact that the events in the song do not correspond with those of Lennon's murder.
When asked whether "Moonlight Shadow" is a reference to John Lennon's murder in a 1995 interview. 
Oldfield responded..
"Not really... well, perhaps, when I look back on it, maybe it was. I actually arrived in New York that awful evening when he was shot and I was staying at the Virgin Records house in Perry Street, which was just a few blocks down the road from the Dakota Building where it happened, so it probably sank into my subconscious. It was originally inspired by a film I loved – Houdini, starring Tony Curtis, which was about attempts to contact Houdini after he'd died, through spiritualism... it was originally a song influenced by that, but a lot of other things must have crept in there without me realising it".

Moonlight Shadow (Mike Oldfield Tribute)


Alors que le leadership des États-Unis recule et que l’ONU peine plus que jamais à exercer une quelconque influence sur le cours des évènements internationaux, les crises ne cessent de se multiplier. Les clivages se creusent et contribuent ainsi à une intensification des conflits tout en empêchant toute projection vers de potentielles sorties de crise. C’est le cas en Ukraine : malgré le bilan humain catastrophique et l’enlisement du conflit, la mise en œuvre de négociations n’est pas à l’ordre du jour. C’est aussi le cas à Gaza : alors que l’embrasement régional suscite les inquiétudes, les remontrances des alliés d’Israël ne contraignent pas Benyamin Netanyahou à cesser de bombarder impunément des civils. Cette impunité concerne également les acteurs de conflits plus éloignés de la focale des médias occidentaux, notamment au Soudan et en République démocratique du Congo où les luttes destructrices semblent à ce jour insolubles.


Dans ce monde de tensions et de conflits, quel rôle peuvent encore jouer les instances internationales ? L’Occident ne se fourvoie-t-il pas en espérant pouvoir résoudre les crises qui frappent le monde ? Quels scénarios peuvent être envisagés à l’égard de la guerre en Ukraine ? Quelle solution peut-on espérer trouver au sempiternel conflit du Proche-Orient ? Quelle place occupe aujourd’hui l’Europe dans ce monde multipolaire et divisé ?


Autant d’enjeux qu’aborde Hubert Védrine, ancien Secrétaire général de l’Élysée, ancien ministre français des Affaires étrangères (1997-2002) et co-auteur, avec Pascal Boniface, de l’Atlas des crises et des conflits (Armand Colin, Fayard, 6e édition).

The French philosopher, orientalist, political scientist, and sociologist Olivier Roy realized early in his career that he would not spend his life working as a schoolteacher. He was most interested in various crises. After the war in Afghanistan began in the late 1970s, Roy regularly traveled to the country, to the mujahideen, and studied the war's impact on the traditional Afghan society. His understanding of Afghanistan’s unique context proved useful when he was advising and organizing special UN missions to the country during the Soviet invasion.
Later, Olivier Roy served as the head of the OSCE mission during the civil war in Tajikistan after the collapse of the Soviet Union. As a scholar, he has focused on Islamic fundamentalism, Islam in the West, and Middle East. Currently, he writes about the crisis of culture and its alarming consequences for the world.

Roy believes that while crises are dangerous for society, they force people to take responsibility. For him, Donald Trump’s rise to power in the United States is an example of a good crisis. For instance, Europe slowly began to realize that it was left alone, without American support, and would have to defend its principles on its own. In order to protect its way of life, Europe will need to rearm, which requires internal consensus.
“For the first time in a long while, we have to ask people whether they are ready to die for their way of life, for their principles. We don’t know the answer. For the young generation, the idea of joining the army is exotic. We are confronted with that choice — are we ready to fight to defend way of life or to surrender?” Roy says.

Journalist Nataliya Gumenyuk speaks with Olivier Roy about the crisis of culture, its replacement by codes and norms, how society can return to reality and the importance of social connections, madmen in power, and where he was wrong about the Russia-Ukraine war.
