Practice Mix 4.24.23 - Takeover Set: 'Subtronics'

[Another re-upload from my "audiomack exile", a beautiful slow, relaxed, "wobbly" lofi-pop song. Maybe will remix it a bit, make it a bit "brighter", maybe not. Here's what I wrote upon the "initial release" in Nov. 2022: ]

Featuring the soothing voice of Cristina Soto (from JUST BORROWING) and, for the first time, drums by Shawn Zorn. Whose ride cymbal was quite vibrant sometimes,,,,or maybe it was the TARDIS that materialized in his recording studio!!? Definitely sounds like it! :P  

It's a jazzy, VERY slow, very laid back track with hiphop style drumming. Maybe a little TOO laid back for its own good? So it might lack a little bit of good old pizzazz, but am really digging this "sluggish vibe" more and more with every listen... ;)

Wow! A marvellous Suzanne Vega track you probably never heard of?!? :O

Well, probably because it's a new World / Jazz / Pop song of mine... but definitely got that "Vega-Vibe". Vocals (for the first time) by Cristina Soto... but definitely NOT a Future Bass song as the label said on her vocal box! ;)

Rather another percussive Jazzpop song, featuring some Afropop mixed with Merengue beats! 

Would really LOVE to hear this song being played be a REAL band of talented musicians! :)

For the more experimental drum patterns in the solo part I hired Eric Harland once again. Well, ahem, his fantastic drum tracks.

Went a little bit in a "topical direction" with the artwork / collage, but you can associate that with the lyrics I think.

Just Borrowing

Another sharp turn! In terms of genre... some bluesy Jazz, or Jazz Pop, maybe "Alternative Jazz"? 

Why not, there's all kinds of "alternative styles" now. And real "hepcats": maybe they would wrinkle their noses when listening to this "digital pseudo jazz". So let's stay with "Alternative Jazz"! :P

Time Stood Still

Well, well... changed quite a bit, this short, little, yet bombastic track! 

Originally was based on a bunch of totally different vocals from a production workshop (with a little contest of sorts). But those vocals aren't / weren't released yet and not meant to be published in any other form than the official release.

So had to look elsewhere... and found another little treasure in one of the old vocal packs by EDM artist Zara Taylor (already mentioned a few times she exclusively does EDM stuff herself, what a pity). And added a few phrases spoken by Cristina Soto.

Might sound a bit repetitive at first, but I'd say it really helps to get the "message" across. And that message might resonate quite well these days, with more and more of those petty, divisive, reactonary figures rising to the top. At a point in history, where it's abundantly clear that in a capitalist system you can buy EVERYTHING, even the most powerful political offices.

Whatever, like the track... really tried my best to "master" it myself this time, quite happy with the sound. Hope it "translates".

Didn't want the artwork to look too "naive", too "chliché-ridden", so went into a bit different, a bit more "existential" direction: underneath, we all look the same, baby! ;)

INFO: Middle aged music maker (and recreational drummer) from the middle of Franconian nowhere arranging music for open minded music lovers who (like me) don't want to listen to the same (kind of) music all/every day - way too boring (or even annoying).

So you'll find all kinds of stuff here, from Space Jazz to Hip Hop, from Synthpop to Triphop, from Folk to Doom, from here to there, from then to now, and many things in between - except for "pure" EDM / Techno / Trance, not my cup of tea. :P 

Many tracks tend towards "alternative pop". Well, if you don't like a song/genre - just skip it! I won't mind...  ;)

P.S.: Before you ask: I (almost) never start with the vocals, asking myself: what strange things could I make with those?

Instead I start making strange music THEN look for some vocal parts that might fit. You'd be surprised how often you get a "match" the moment you throw those in the mix. Well, sometimes it needs a little tweaking... ;)
