"Revolución to Roxy"

Yes, the London-born guitarist and producer Phil Manzanera is part of one of the greatest bands of all time, but that really isn't the story. It's just part of it. Like, 10% of it. Which is crazy when you think of the cultural impact of Roxy Music, but the fact is, Manzanera has lived an interesting life that goes far beyond his tenure in an influential rock and roll band. His book Revolucion to Roxy explains everything and after you hit the first chapter you'll see his origin story isn't a simple one. He covers being multi-racial, traveling around the world as a kid and witnessing actual revolutions in Cuba and Venezuala, being sent to a posh boarding school,
and the sudden death of his father. And all that happened before he was fifteen. An old story is a guy picks up a guitar and his life
changes and that's for sure a big part of the story here, but the long-time history buff only started to understand why he was drawn to music in the first place years later. It turns out that Manzanera is a direct descendent of an Italian opera singer. And a Jewish pirate. I'm not joking. But the more he digs, the more answers start to show up that form an historical polaroid that's still coming into focus. Revolucion To Roxy is a brilliant read, filled with narrative velocity and authorial poise, but it's also the story of a guy who's figuring out who he is in real time. And the reverse engineering is as surprising to him as it is to us. For example, his dad worked for the British Overseas Airway Corporation. Or did he? Being drawn to music was free will. Or was it? You get the idea. Revolucion To Roxy is a marvelous blast of biography and self-examination and it really explores the idea that history is shooting through our DNA and even if you ignore it, it's going to tap you on the shoulder and point you wherever it wants.

The Emmy Award-nominated Mark Bacino is more than just a craftsman of pure pop magic--he's a producer, composer, educator and journalist. I first got on board with Mark's music in 2003 for his brilliant album Million Dollar Milkshake, which was the follow-up to his equally brilliant debut, Pop Job. Since then, he's put out Queens English in 2010 and fifteen years later he's backed that up with his brand new album Top Of The World. A sterling ten-song set, Top Of The World is filled with hooks galore, but it's also Bacino's most observational and philosophical work yet. Filled with tracks like the thrilling percussive stomp of Not That Guy to the horny swagger of Flop Of The World, Bacino has never sounded more assured. Falling somewhere between Marshall Crenshaw and Mike Viola, Bacino's music is a refreshing and charming streetsmart pop. I call him the Cole Porter of Queens because his lyrics are clever, his timing impeccable and his humor and wisdom always on full display. Bacino is the owner of The Queens English Recording Co., a boutique studio-music production house where he produces fellow artists and composes for TV/advertising. He currently serves as Producer of New Media and Audio Content for Queens Public Television in New York City where he’s earned those two Emmy nominations for his audio engineering work and he hosts both the “Queens Creative” and “Queens County USA” podcasts.
He also writes for Guitar World, SonicScoop and Songwriter’s Market.

SONG STORY
One of the albums in the 90s that marked my arrival in France was the sublime “Woodface“ by Crowded House. The band were a huge influence on me, and  I've lost count of the amount of times I've played the Weather With You in gigs - the song is always greeted with such gusto by Anglo-Saxon audiences. I was fascinated with how Neil Finn’s voice and melodies manage to be melancholic, soulful and heartwarming all at the same time. I particularly liked how he used a C major lift in the chorus from an E minor verse in Four Seasons in One day. I must admit I stole the idea for this song a little, shifting from the minor bass riff in the same way for the chorus. The classic guitar solo at the end by Stéphane Poterlot was a moment of pure natural inspiration - he just blasted it out because he wanted to get the idea of a solo down on the demo. It is such a wonderful piece of spontaneous perfection, it was never redone, and I kept it in the song as is.  

DEDICATION
Bassists can often have either groove or melody. It's rare - like Paul McCartney -  to have both at the same time . Stephane Poterlot is also one of these bassists. There is this natural melodic drive when he plays, knowing instinctively when to stay on the kick and when not to, when to leave the line simple or to take the initiative. He taught me how to use melodic lifts and alternate grooves to shift the mood and intensity between different movements in a song that have the same fundamental chord structure. He kind of showed me they way out of the flat dimensions of my own music and wake up a song with memorable counter-melodies. He has played base, classic guitar and electric guitar on about half the songs here, sometimes both left and right-handed, so I’ve had plenty of time to watch him un action and grasp a little of his playing techniques, his love of the bass as an instrument of both of melody as well as groove, and I think the baseline in this song is a wonderful example of his talents.

The Assignment: Reorganize a familiar song note by note.

Step 1: Choose a familiar song for which you have access to the sheet music.

Step 2: Select a segment of the song, perhaps one round of the chorus and the verse — perhaps more, or less, after you finish reading these instructions.

Step 3: Write down all the notes (and their lengths) in the main melodic line.

Step 4: Alphabetize the notes, and also sort them by length, in ascending order, so an Ab goes before an A, and a quarter note goes before a whole note, and so forth. (You might also adjust for where the note falls relative to middle C, starting low and proceeding up.)

Step 5: Record results when all those notes are played in the sequence that was derived during Step 4.

Bonus round: Also consider appending to Step 5 what it sounds like when that same set of notes is played randomly.

[Disquiet Junto 0693] Pineapple Threads

Tristan Louth-Robins is a South Australian artist working principally in the medium of sound art and field recording. Ideas of sound and its signification are key elements in Louth-Robins' practice, traversing the space between the visual and aural his work is realised through the mediums of recordings, installation, visual art and performance. He is interested in sound and its associative implications - including its relationship to objects, technology, urban space, memory and the natural world. 


Since 2005, Louth-Robins has presented work in Australia and internationally as a solo artist, whilst also collaborating with artists, writers, researchers, musicians and performers. 

Working across a vast array of activities encompassing composition, sound design, installation art, field recording and workshops, his work has been featured in events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts (2006), The National Regional Arts Festival (2012), Mildura-Wentworth Arts Festival (2013), Fairfax Festival (2013) and Adelaide Fringe Festival (2014); and selected works exhibited at galleries including The Australian Experimental Art Foundation (2009), SASA Gallery (2012, 2015), Light Square Gallery (2012) and FELT Space (2015). His audio works have been broadcast on radio including Radio National, Classic FM, The BBC (UK), Acoustic Frontiers (USA) and RBB (Germany).

There was once a renowned Italian Renaissance sculptor who was asked by a bishop viewing one of his pieces how he had known there was such a beautiful lion contained within that massive, misshapen piece of stone he'd been given ? The artist replied that he simply knocked off everything that didn't look like a lion... I love this metaphor, as I believe it says all you need to know about the learning curve of life. In order to acheive our creative and worldly ambitions we have no choice but to keep relentlessly banging away a little each day (“no, not like that, that’s not a lion…no, that’s not a lion either…) until at some point, by default of the thing you are making being a little closer to representing what it is you were trying to express than it was the day before, you actually might find yourself one day with something of real artistic merit in your hands. I think I have spent my life being so blown away by the art and music of others - all those damn beautiful lions out there - how could I not be tempted to spend a little time whilst on this mortal coil banging a few rocks together myself on the off-chance there might be some plausible lion of my own out there waiting to be revealed ?
