Ontario’s processing vegetable sector is valued at more than $100 million. Hand-harvested field cucumbers make up $16 million, a niche that’s often forgotten. Many tons go to American processors to be made into a variety of pickles. The stubby ends, known as nubs and crooks, are used to make relish.

The M.A. Gedney Pickling Company was established in Minneapolis in 1881 by a man named Matthias Gedney. The Gedney Company contracted with hundreds of Minnesota farmers to grow the cucumbers used for their pickle products. Many of the farmers, in turn, ended up paying their children to pick the cucumbers as part of their summer chores, using the money to pay for school clothes and other needed items for the family. 

In the later 20th century, the Gedney Company identified itself as the Minnesota Pickle. The company partnered with the Minnesota State Fair to market it’s “State Fair” Pickle line, taking winning recipes from the Fair and selling them in stores. In this episode, Jeff and Carl Tuttle, 5th generation descendants of the company founder, tell the story of the M. A. Gedney PIckling Company.

Bring Me Your Cucumbers

Lee Stiles is the Secretary of the Lea Valley Growers Association and he gives an insight into growing fresh vegetables for the British supermarkets. 

The Lea Valley area is made up of some 450 acres of glasshouses and is near London, on the Essex and Hertfordshire border, - straddling the River Lea.

From here 80 million cucumbers are grown every year - three-quarters of the UK crop - as well as 100 million sweet peppers, 25 million aubergines and thousands of tonnes of vine tomatoes.

About 70 growers are part of the association, with several of those based within Greater London.
