In 1988, Bill Drummond (who along with Jimmy Cauty, were The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, also known as The JAMMS...and later, The KLF) produced a book called "The Manual:  How To Have a Number One The Easy Way."  This described the process by which, under yet another name, The Timelords, they had produced the track "Doctorin' The Tardis" which was a novelty dance track full of samples (at the high point of the "cut and paste" trend that also included M/A/R/R/S "Pump Up The Volume", Coldcut "Doctorin' The House", Bomb The Bass "Beat Dis"...and other club classics) that did, indeed, hit #1 on the UK and New Zealand charts (and was top ten in a few other countries--and, sigh, nearly completely ignored by the mainstream here in the US.)  

"Doctorin' The Tardis" was crafted out of hard club beats mixed with Gary (the disgraced) Glitter's "Rock & Roll pt II" beat, samples of Daleks, Harry Enfield's Loadsamoney character, parts of The Sweet's "Blockbuster", a vocal drop from a Steve Walsh track...and the Doctor Who theme.  Throw all that in a blender and you get a #1 hit.  (It was such a blockheadedly brilliant idea, that Bill and Jimmy credited the song to a car--Ford Timelord--and even got the CAR to be interviewed about "their" song.  (Have you figured out that I love all the crazy stuff those guys got into?) )  

The book, cheekily, described their process and encouraged others to do the same.  At least one hit track--"Bring Me Edelweiss" by an Austrian act calling themselves Edelweiss--is claimed to have followed The Manual for their track (this could be apocryphal.)  For that song, they based their melody on Abba's "S.O.S.", included samples from Run-DMC and Falco--and some regionally appropriate yodeling.  They sent this track to #1 in six countries, it hit #5 in the UK.  And, again...sigh, nearly completely ignored by US radio...though it was memorably played on MTV a lot--back when they actually played music videos--and it was a big hit in the clubs.  

I happen to own an original copy of The Manual.  

I'm not saying I followed The Manual in making today's Interbay track, "Hunger Mechanism," but the end result definitely reminds me of "Doctorin' The Tardis" and "Bring Me Edelweiss."  (Your mileage may vary.)

Big Beat Social with Devil Fish on CCR

The original Work To Do was on Monte Cristo Gamble [sic] from 2000.  It's a bigold collage of beats, breaks and basslines from all sorts of sources.  many of which, i doubt I'd get the sample clearance for.  
The original vocal sample (an awful lot of work to do) and most of the other vocal samples) are from a vinyl of 'not the 9 'o clock news' - a British satirical TV programme that ran from 1979 to 1982 with Rowan Atkinson (later of Blackadder and erm. Mr. Bean), Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones as well as many others who would go on to great comedy fame in the 1980s and 1990s.
the whole track was heavily inspired by Coldcut's Beats and Pieces in it's cut and paste, constantly shifting arrangement.
This 2020 remake tones down some of the most obvious samples that would get me sued, and reworks a (slightly) more coherent arrangement.  it's still pretty nuts though.
there's another later version of Work To Do with more vocals and rapping on it.  If i get that properly sorted and mastered, it'll go up here as well!

I'm a big fan of music generally, and also making connections with people through music. My collection has grown over the years and is still growing weekly! It contains a bit of everything, mostly influenced by breakbeat and drum and bass although more recently house and tech house. I was and still am a big fan of breaks, especially tracks from the likes of Freeland, Atomic Hooligan, Freq Nasty, Stanton Warriors, Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts etc but this list is definitely not exhaustive and I will listen to, and play anything within reason. Got to have an open mind!

The EverySongIOwn project has one simple aim, to perform music using every song I have ever owned. As owning music has become an increasingly tenuous pursuit, I often rely on a hard drive of music from my teenage years. Exploring how algorithms can help me map, discover, recombine and regenerate large collections of prerecorded music, expect collage, glitch, noise and some ODB. It started with a simple conceit that has developed over 5 years to emcompass a broad range of techniques to which algorithms are integral to organising the vast the source material used in performance into something tractable, as well as the composition itself.

A large corpus (10,000 tracks) is analysed for onsets and short areas around these onsets are identified as potential candidates for recombination in performance. These snippets are analysed for salient qualities that might make their combination a smoother reentry based on timbral and harmonic information. They are also classified by a neural network as to their likelihood of being a kick, snare or hihat, although in reality these snippets of full mixed tracks are rarely just that. Different sorting approaches are used to determine subsets of the 2M+ snippets into more manageable (~10,000) candidates for performance. These subsets are then further clustered into smaller groups based on their audio features.

This brief is then used in Supercollider along with generative drum algorithms to make collages emcompassing glitch, hip hop and noise. The improvised freedom of pressing the sample faucet and seeing what comes out makes for unexpected and unqiue performances, with the skill being in crafting coherence.

Taking leads from John Oswald's Plunderphonics, the cut and paste work of DJ Food, the hard glitch of Hudson Mohawke and Food For Animals, there is no other way to make this music

30+ years of writing music.  now back to lots of hardware to complement the soft synths.  And of course, the compulsion to add the kitchen sink, fridge and oven is still there!

Jimi Needles' musical roots are in hip hop, soul, funk, and disco, but on the turntables he combines pin-point scratching, intricate cuts, breaks, and bass music to craft a unique and high-energy sound that spans genres and keeps the crowd moving! His dynamic sets always pay homage to old-school classics while blending modern sounds, ensuring every performance is one-of-a-kind.

Known for his genre-defying party mixtapes, deck-defying festival performances, and an array of bootlegs and original productions on labels like Swing & Bass, Thick Boy Records, and Jungle Strikes, Jimi has built a reputation as both a skilled turntablist and an innovative producer.

In November 2024, he released his debut album, ''Ample Clearance'', a self-produced project that showcases his versatility as an artist, as a writer, a DJ and a producer.
