Episode 31 of First Impressions is based around a transatlantic chat with Guy Zeek of Decaying Leather as the family band look forward to the release of their latest LP in December. As well as snippets of songs such as the Mikey Mandolin co-write ‘Remedy’, drummer Gus’s beautiful rendition of ‘Blackbird’ and bassist Bulduzzi’s Spanish language debut (okay, only in the chorus) ‘Tan humana q' duele’, the episode also contains some (very) early attempts at comedy from Guy and Pete via an old cassette found by Gus in the ‘80s compartment of the family archive. 

The lads discuss the live gigs Guy has most enjoyed playing at, including one with the amazing Dead Letters at the peak of their powers (listen out for clips of their songs Tug of War and Until Your Dying Time with Guy pounding the drums behind musical maestros Trev and Rich). Other inspirations cited are Damon Albarn, Joan as Policewoman and Billy Cobham. Guy also discusses his guitar collection and plans to ‘pay it forward’ by volunteering to teach music at a youth club (‘youthie’) in Canada, where once on the Wirral he received coaching from guitar and drums by older mentors. 

Best listened to through headphones, the recording on Guy’s side is a bit quiet in the last 15 mins, so PUMP UP THE VOLUME!

Klaus Benedek grew up in a small town near Vienna. His interest in electronic music began during the 90s techno hype. He spent hours watching video clips on MTV and viva and thus gaining knowledge about electronic music. In 2004, he began teaching himself to produce. Gathering his inspiration wherever he could, he began collecting 12" vinyl records the same year and 2 years later got his first dj-gigs. From 2008 till 2010 he was one of the resident DJs at the MNML Thursdays in the Camera Club. In 2012 he started with Alex Kolodziej the event-series Tellerbetrieb. Currently he finds most of his inspiration in Chicago House, Deep House, Disco and Breakbeat. After releases on labels like Petrol Dollar, Subversaal, rekooda, Soul Shift Music, Clean and Dirty Recordings and tanzbar, Klaus launched his own label forTunea in 2014.

PWTF is the alter ego of Australian producer Brett Perry. He is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and experimental electronic music producer. First started in 2017, he released his first EP INTERIM. It featured dance and and experimental sounds that shaped and outlined what would be PWTF's future style. The EP took roughly 2 years to make, and was Brett's first endeavour into the music world. It was a project designed to prove that Brett could start and finish a project. In March 2019 PWTF released his album FRAGMENTS which further pushes his electronic experimental style. The album is fully conceptual, with the idea of being in a synthetic, atmospheric space with sound and colour. This idea was born out of Brett's love for the cosmos, and he wanted to capture what it would sound like if you were out amongst the stars. His next EP, HEADSPINS released on December 10 2021, features full rap and singing vocals from collaborators all around the world. It was the biggest project PWTF had undertaken, scoping out this new sound and forming a new baseline for quality in his sound.
