In this invited lecture at Marist College, hosted by the Catholic Studies Program as part of their Marcelin Lecture Series, I narrate some of the key points and developments in the story of how we ended up with the current list of the Seven Deadly Sins, which are: Gluttony, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride.  Originally, these start out as the Eight Capital Vices, a list which includes sadness, acedia, and vainglory, and which does not include envy.  So, how did we end up with the list we know today?  

The story involves Christian monks in the Egyptian desert, Benedictine monks, a reluctant pope, poets, scholastic professors, confessors, and mystics, and ranges over a millennium of thinkers and texts.  In the process, I discuss some of the key players:  Evagrius Ponticus, John Cassian, Gregory I, Alcuin, Peter Lombard, Thomas Aquinas, and Dante Alighieri

This portion of the talk discusses the treatments of the seven deadly sins by poets ranging from Prudentius to Chaucer and Dante, and by mystics like St. John of the Cross. We also conclude by examining a few additional topics raised by questions from the audience.

Dante Alighieri's Inferno details nine concentric circles of hell within a funnel-shaped abyss, where punishments grow more severe as sins worsen, ranging from Limbo (non-believers) to Treachery (betrayers). Guided by Virgil, Dante descends through lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, and fraud to reach Satan.

"7 Hz binaurals (theta frequency) have proven benefits in scientific studies for enhancing creativity, reducing anxiety and depression, improving memory consolidation, and promoting deep relaxation. Here is an evidence-based summary:

Anxiety and depression reduction: A quasi-experimental study (Oskouei et al., 2024) showed that listening to 7.5 Hz theta binaural beats for 20 minutes across eight sessions significantly reduced depression and anxiety scores in opioid-dependent patients (p=0.000). Other research on theta-range binaural beats (6–7 Hz) also reports reduced anxiety, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and improved quality of life after daily exposure. Note: Some mixed studies indicate variability — in rare cases, short theta sessions could temporarily worsen mood or symptoms depending on the individual (unlike more consistent alpha results).

Creativity, mood and well-being: A 2025 pilot study on university students found that daily 20-minute theta binaural beats (around 6–7 Hz) significantly improved creativity scores (Creative Personality Scale), psychological well-being, and reduced total mood disturbance (POMS). Participants reported better emotional balance and a more positive outlook after consistent use.

Memory and cognitive effects: Results are mixed but promising with proper duration. Studies show 7 Hz binaural beats increase theta power and support memory consolidation and cognitive flexibility when used for 6+ minutes. However, very short exposures (e.g., 3 minutes at 7 Hz) may temporarily reduce verbal memory recall in some people. Longer sessions promote better learning and “flow” states.

Effects on brain waves: Directly increases relative theta power in parietal and temporal lobes (Ala et al., 2018), with entrainment visible after just 6 minutes and stronger brain network changes after 9 minutes. This promotes deep meditative states, emotional regulation, creativity, and restorative rest. Also effective for insomnia (Bavafa et al., 2023), where it boosts theta activity and improves sleep quality.

In short, 7 Hz theta binaurals act as a “creative and restorative” frequency — ideal for meditation, inspiration, emotional healing, and mental recovery. Best results come with 10–30 minutes daily using headphones. Some people notice effects in days, others after a week of consistent use."
