Secure 20/20 - User Involvement In An Effective Information Security Program

In episode 4 of Transformational Healthcare Leadership, Dr Mark O’Brien talks to Annie Flamsteed, the Australian Founder and Executive Chair of iNSPiRETEK.

Annie started her career as an elite competitive gymnast but chose to exit the sport in her late teens due, in part, to the incredible pressure placed on high-performance athletes. Her lived experience of the mental health challenges that she and many of her peers face makes her passionate about preventative healthcare; it inspired her to ‘hack the system’ so that data analytics could be used to predict when, or if, someone was potentially going to struggle with mental illness in order to accelerate their access to clinical healthcare.

Personal data collection in intrinsic to iNSPiRETEK’s services and Mark talks to Annie about the challenges around security and confidentiality with sensitive data particularly as much of their work revolves around young athletes. She says for her organisation it is really important that they only do business with ethical partners.

And as this is a healthcare leadership podcast Annie and Mark had a fascinating discussion about the personal and professional drivers that have shaped her leadership journey so far. Sheer grit and determination and a passionate commitment to the cause have absolutely been key; but also key to spring boarding iNSPiRETEK forward has been the ‘humility to ask for help’ and when it came to raising capital she looked for ‘smart capital’ and found people who provide help along with funding.

Transformational Healthcare Leadership: Annie Flamsteed

Whether you’re the type of person who always needs the latest and greatest smartphone or you’re content to wait two years to upgrade, chances are good you probably have some old smartphones kicking around in a closet or junk drawer somewhere. Before you go and sell an old Android device, though, there are a few steps you should safety measures you should take first. First things first, encrypt your data. Just performing a factory reset will wipe out your data to the average user, but a motivated hacker will still be able to recover some of your data. Encrypting your data will lock it down, so head into Settings and Security and being the encryption. This may take more than an hour, but the added security is well worth the extra time. Once that’s done, perform a factory reset on your device. This will restore your phone to the way it was when it came out of the box, and make sure all your private data is inaccessible to any future owners.

Privacy Perspectives: Preparing for Privacy Enforcement Inquiries

The principles of responsible data are that data and technology can play an important part in effective social change work, but they must be used with care. People’s rights to consent, privacy, security and ownership are important to keep in mind while collecting, analysing, storing, presenting and reusing data.

With that in mind, why is responsible data important for the open data movement? How can the principles and practice of responsible data be incorporated into open data initiatives?

Alix Dunn will talk about the foundations of the responsible data community, where it is headed and how responsible data tactics can inform considerations about what data is made available. She will take a look at how those decisions are made, and how intermediary organisations can help by building responsible data into their strategies. Alix will also look at different sectors that are struggling to understand the potential unintended harm that opening some data can have.

Alix is the Executive Director and co-founder of The Engine Room, an international organisation that helps social change initiatives and other change agents make the most of data and technology to increase their impact. She is a recovering researcher with a passion for applying creative solutions to difficult problems. She works on identifying data and technology techniques and strategies that can empower social change initiatives around the world to maximise their impact and make the most of their resources. Friday Lunchtime Lecture: Responsible data tactics for positive social change

There has no doubt been a change in the way we look at protecting and securing our key data, with robust data protection, enhanced data security plans and increased governance to ensure compliance with ever-increasing regulatory requirements.

However, much of this is concentrated in our datacentre and our central data sets, which although critical, is not all of our data. 

Today critical data no longer lives behind corporate firewalls and security, it lives out on a wide range of mobile devices, laptops, tablets and smartphones, often 1000's of miles away from our datacentre.

When our data is so dispersed, how do we ensure we are protecting it on a wide range of different devices, how do we know where it is and what it contains?

That is the focus of this weeks podcast, as I'm joined by Yadin Porter De Leon of Druva to discuss the challenge of data that lives right on the edge of our network.

We look at the complexity of the problem and why it has too be much more than "backup" and why it's critical we have full visibility of our data, regardless of where it sits in our business.

We look at why it is crucial knowing where our data is, what it contains, who has and is accessing it, while ensuring we have it protected and can always find it, regardless of whether our end device is accessible or not.

We wrap up our edge data discussion by providing a little bit of listener homework, as we point you in the direction of the kind of questions you should be asking yourself, so you can build a data protection policy for all of your data, not just that which is stored in your datacentre.

3. Nonsense in the subject line
4. Incorrect domain name in images and links (hover over a link without clicking to reveal this)
5. Pressure tactics to scare you into acting fast
6. Unexpected message
7. Unexpected attachments or links in the message
