It’s a classic from 1983 that has achieved true cult status, and it turns 40 this year, so that deserved a little something from the podcast. While doing a LIVE interview on The Morning Show on East Coast FM with Declan Meehan, Dave Thomas was caught off guard when his partner Patrick Bracken was introduced into the programme via the telephone and he proposed to Dave LIVE. Probably the first live radio marriage proposal after the Referendum on Marriage Equality in Ireland in 2015.

Dave Thomas is a voice over actor with over 30 years of performance experience in entertainment and advertising. He’s voiced commercial campaigns for Gatorade, BMW, features for NFL Network, video game characters like Sorrow in Metal Gear Solid or Mosely in Gabriel Knight with Tim Curry. Cartoons like King of the Hill where he starred in more than 20 episodes, regularly as Lane Prately and in Nickelodeons The Last Air Bender as the Master Fire Bender. He’s done live television announcing for the NAACP Image Awards and been a Master of Ceremony at the Faires, Horse Tournaments and High Dive shows. He’s appeared in movies and television although he doesn’t care for it that much. He mentors and coaches writers and poets in Pen USA’s Emerging Voices Fellows and Pen In The Classroom as well as privately in his home broadcast quality studio. Dave feels sharing tricks and insights from years of selling snake oil with advertisers belongs in the responsible hands of writers and poets working in literature.

We had the great opportunity to listen and talk to Dave Thomas, an original signatory and author of The Manifesto for Agile Software Development, co-author of The Pragmatic Programmer and founder of the publishing company The Pragmatic Bookshelf.

We learned live about the principles that have been subjects of many of Thomas’ globally successful publications. In his works he termed the expressions Code Kata and DRY (Don’t Repeat Yourself), which found their ways into the international programming consciousness based on their merits as ideas and principles.

But this event was far from a strict talk or lecture, we had the opportunity to discuss these ideas with him and the other attendees and ask questions of our own. Through these first hand conversations and discussions we were able to develop a far deeper and better understanding of these principles than by merely reading about them on the internet.
