¿A qué se debe el gran impacto público que una película de distribución independiente, como La sustancia, ha tenido en un público masivo?
La respuesta automática sería el tema al centro del filme: las exigencias físicas y estéticas que demanda una sociedad a todos sus integrantes, no sólo a los jóvenes y adultos sino también a quienes se vuelven mayores y ya no pueden competir en profesiones que demandan belleza estándar y cero imperfecciones (como la de actriz de cine).
Sin embargo, lo más interesante de La sustancia no está ahí. Esas preocupaciones ya han sido tratadas de mejor manera en otras partes, incluyendo por cierto Reality +, notable corto de la propia Coralie Fargeat. La clave del filme y su notoriedad parece residir en la particular estructura que escogió para contar su historia: la del "fairy tale", el clásico cuento de hadas con magia, reglas, prohibiciones, princesa y bruja incluidas; sólo que en este caso, ambas están contenidas en el mismo envase. "Recuerden: ustedes son una". Ying y Yang, juventud y madurez, belleza y fealdad, bien y mal. Todo parte de la misma cosa. De eso y más se habla en este podcast.

Hosts Josh and Jamie and special returning guest critic and author Violet Lucca discuss a double feature inspired by her new book "David Cronenberg: Clinical Trials" with one of his earliest inspirations in sci-fi paperback cover artist turned experimental filmmaker Ed Emshwiller's RELATIVITY (1966) and one of Cronenberg's more unloved and forgotten passion projects, the psychological drama SPIDER (2002) starring Ralph Fiennes as a Freudian schizophrenic whose subjective mind provides Cronenberg with dreamy and depressed experimental form of the film.

"The Shrouds" had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it received mixed reviews but has steadily been growing in appreciation (as all David Cronenberg films do) as it screened at more film festivals, including TIFF and NYFF Film Festivals. The film is Cronenberg's most personal to date as it deals with the grief he went through following the passing of his beloved wife of nearly 40 years. Cronenberg was kind enough to speak with us at the New York Film Festival about his work on the film, which you can listen to below. 160 - My Bloody Valentine (1981), Scream (1996) and Scanners (1981)

A psychosexual thriller that's neither psychosexual nor thrilling enough, The Shrouds is a disappointment. There's great promise to businessman Vincent Cassel's invention of a technologically advanced shroud that creates a 3D model of the decaying body it houses, when we're shown the lust with which he observes his deceased wife's corpse. The film is peppered with recurrent imagery of her disfigured body, and its importance to Cassel's character is constantly reinforced, but the film is too talky, its imagery too bland, and its plot too convoluted to make the most of it. A shame.
