The case is relating to a German company, GE Auto Service Leasing GmbH, and its dispute with the Spanish tax authority over a refused VAT refund. The core issue is whether a tax authority can deny a VAT refund if supporting documents are submitted late, even if they are provided during subsequent review or legal action. The Court clarifies that while timely submission is expected, member states must adhere to principles of equivalence and effectiveness when applying national laws on evidence submission.
