This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosophical short story writer, essayist, and poet Jorge Luis Borges's story "The Theme Of The Traitor And The Hero" which can be found in Collected Fictions. It focuses on the several narrative frames to the story. In the deepest, a hero of the Irish revolts Fergus Kilpatrick is revealed as being a traitor to the cause, by his old friend and comrade, James Alexander Nolan, who he had commissioned to find the traitor.  A number of events with parallels to Shakespearian plays ensue surrounding Kilpatrick's death, all portions of a massive drama designed by Nolan, as Kilpatrick's descendent Ryan figures out through his research

My New Decision Making Process

"Left Lane Wisdom" is based on the songwriter's true story of survival from a catastrophic car accident. When a routine shopping trip led to an inexplicable decision to break from years of habit and take the middle lane instead of the usual left, it resulted in a devastating 120km/h collision. Through intimate storytelling, the song explores the irony of how breaking from a trusted routine nearly proved fatal. Written in the immediate aftermath of the accident, while still processing physical pain and emotional shock, it contemplates the often-overlooked wisdom in our daily habits. The miracle of survival transforms into a profound meditation on how sometimes the familiar path is familiar for reasons we don't appreciate until we stray from it.
