Er war jener Typ Mensch, der mit einer solchen kunstvollen Einfalt daherkam, dass selbst die Luft im Raum leiser atmete, um seiner Bedeutungslosigkeit nicht in die Quere zu kommen. Seine Worte, schwer wie lauwarmes Wasser, plätscherten aus ihm heraus und legten sich wie ein nasses Tuch auf jede Hoffnung auf Lebendigkeit. Die Frauen, die ihn sahen, begannen unbewusst zu gähnen — nicht aus Müdigkeit, sondern weil ihr Körper schneller als ihr Verstand begriff: Dieser Mann war ein Sonntag ohne Zeitung, ein Winter ohne Schnee, ein Gespräch ohne Frage.

Ich habe sie seit Jahren nicht gesehen, nicht gehört, nicht einmal zufällig einen Schatten ihres Namens auf einem Briefumschlag erhascht oder das Echo ihrer Stimme in einem Bahnhof vernommen – und dennoch ist sie da, jeden Tag, in der Art, wie der Nachmittag sich neigt, im Duft eines vorbeigehenden Parfums, in der zufälligen Falte eines Kleides, das ihr nicht einmal gehörte, sondern nur die Erinnerung an ihr Gehen nachahmt. Ich habe alles versucht, mich zu entwöhnen, sie aus meinem inneren Leben zu verbannen wie einen gefährlichen Irrtum. Doch je mehr ich vergaß, desto klarer schälte sich ihr Bild aus dem Nebel meines Willens. Ich verstehe es nicht – wie ein Mensch, der nicht mehr existiert, sich so hartnäckig an mein Gedächtnis klammern kann, als sei er ein Bestandteil meines Blutes geworden, als hätte das Vergessen selbst beschlossen, sie nicht auszulassen.
