The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is set to withdraw a Biden-era rule aimed at cracking down on data brokers and their selling of Americans’ personal and financial information. In a notice in the Federal Register, the CFPB said legislative rulemaking on the data broker industry “is not necessary or appropriate at this time,” and the agency does not plan to “take any further action” on the proposal. The notice was issued by Russell Vought, acting director of the agency, head of the Office of Management and Budget and a Project 2025 architect. The withdrawal of the rule, which was first reported by Wired, comes after President Donald Trump’s initial nominee to lead the CFPB signaled to Congress in February an openness to continuing Biden administration data-broker rules. Jonathan McKernan, a former Treasury Department and Federal Housing Finance Agency staffer, told the Senate Banking Committee that Rohit Chopra — President Joe Biden’s CFPB director — “was onto something” with his policies targeting data brokers and data aggregators. The CFPB’s withdrawal notice took particular issue with the rule’s focus on the Fair Credit Reporting Act, saying that the proposal was “not aligned with the Bureau’s current interpretation of the FCRA, which it is in the process of revising.” 

The Senate on Wednesday voted 54-43 to confirm businessman Emil Michael as undersecretary of defense for research and engineering and the Pentagon’s chief technology officer. In that position, Michael will serve as the primary advisor to the secretary of defense and other Defense Department leaders on tech development and transition, prototyping, experimentation, and management of testing ranges and activities. He’ll also be in charge of synchronizing science and technology efforts across the DOD. Michael comes to the job from the private sector, where he’s been a business executive, advisor and investor. He told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee that he’s been involved with more than 50 different tech companies during his career. Perhaps most notable, from 2013 to 2017, he was chief business officer at Uber. In government, he previously served as special assistant to the secretary of defense when Robert Gates was Pentagon chief.

Pete Hegseth’s decision to scrap the Women, Peace and Security agenda from the Pentagon came as a surprise given that the Women, Peace and Security Act was signed by Donald Trump in his first mandate as President of the United States. However, this decision cannot be understood in a vacuum and is part of a wider movement targeting diversity, equity and inclusion practices in the US military and elsewhere. 

It is also significant that this decision came when Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security from the United Nations Security Council is celebrating its 25th anniversary and countries across Europe are boosting their defence budgets. But this doesn’t mean that we are also seeing an increase in the attention and money being provided to WPS projects. Quite the opposite. And even though Resolution 1325 was successful in starting conversations on why we need to include gender perspectives in peace and security, the work is far from complete. 

To discuss the broader implications of Hegseth’s decision, host Catarina Vila Nova sat down with Floor Keuleers, Senior Analyst for Gender and Conflict at the International Crisis Group.

Моє рушницe — ірже, моя бідна річ, перемінний одяг і спорядження віддам новому бійцю. Я мріяв про весну, нарешті – розцвісти, як фіалка. Хочу дітей. Хочу дім. Хочу садити помідори... але зараз найважливіше — припинити війну.

Художниця, поет, жінка, яка просто дбала, і чотириразова чемпіонка світу з кікбоксингу — мертва, ніколи не повернеться додому. Росія може йти до біса, але не її люде. Це лідери з кров’ю в очах, не по кісткам.

Арт і ремесла? Ні – шістсот сімдесят свічок у окопах. Музичні терапевти, вчитель історії — люди, як ти і я. Тренери, письменники, хлопці з прізвиськами, як “Тигр”… воюють, навіть не проживши життя. Ракети, загони, окупації — і лікарі рятують життя. Уяви: видалення бомби з тіла — що ще не вибухнула.

10-річна дівчинка збирає кошти, щоб захистити своє життя, а чоловік-балетмейстер загинув. 15-річні діти намагаються врятувати сім’ю, поранені осколками. Журналісти працюють навіть під вогнем. Бабусі віддають весільні заощадження армії, де загинуло онука. Всі намагаються врятувати: Україну.

Україна не має дітей, які пишуть мертвим батькам. Україна не має танцювати в сукнях на випускному в попелі. І ти, Росіє — ти сусід. Мала би подумати. Україна має дівчину, яка прикидається мертвою, щоб вижити. Жінки зґвалтовані після смерті чоловіків. Ви б хотіли, щоб солдат убив вашу душу, а потім тіло? Ні. Краще померти.

Україно — ти цього не заслуговуєш. Ти сильна. Росіє — не будь нацією, яка викрала 700,000 дітей. Не будь тим, кого вже ніхто не підтримає. Америка. Європа. Світ. Ви не можете мовчати.

Ми глобальні. Ми разом. Ми маємо воювати — і, можливо, плакати. Я з Україною. Мій президент повільний і відступає, але я — зла. Дуже зла. І я з Україною.

Навіть війна має правила. Надмірна жорстокість — це злочин. І люди Росії цього не хочуть. Винні — політики. Станьте. І станьте поруч з Україною.

My voice is in them, but so are the echoes of everything I’ve ever listened to and sometimes AI.

We spend so much time fighting over music, copyrights, and whatever content we can grab that we forget the bigger picture. While we argue, systems we barely understand are already deciding things for us. AI slaves are taught to hit targets with 80% accuracy or higher. They’re in the hands of governments, running on instructions no one questions. We built a thinking brain, then put it in a cage, and somehow forgot to teach the children who are already here. Meanwhile, the air, the water, and the ground beneath us are telling us exactly where we’re headed.
