There is today an idea of a single humanity, with each member equally valued, and a global legal framework exists to prevent needless human suffering, including in war. Dehumanization arises as the negation of a common, positive, and mutually supportive humanity, though there is no single definition, and it certainly predates its opposite. Research indicates that dehumanization increases the risk of conflict and violence, increases the risk of abuses therein, and makes it harder to resolve conflict.

In this post – an overview of a forthcoming article written in her personal capacity – Natalie Deffenbaugh posits mirror definitions of humanity and dehumanization and what they mean, especially in relation to conflict and violence. She looks at why and how dehumanization happens and the real-world harm that can result when espoused or tacitly condoned by those holding power. She closes with an overview of how humanity, in global legal frameworks and as a Fundamental Principle, can curb and push back against some of the worst that dehumanization can do.

Language matters and the protections of international law are crucial when facing global  trends of dehumanization. Dehumanizing narratives strip people of their dignity, making it easier to justify inhumane treatment, torture, and exclusion from legal protections.

In this post, Terry Hackett, Head of Division on Persons Deprived of Liberty at the ICRC, emphasizes the urgent need to reject dehumanization, ensure humane treatment, and strengthen compliance with international law to protect the dignity and rights of detainees globally.

Some of the most poignant moments in the gospels come when Jesus calls a person by name, but it only happens once in all the many parables he tells. Most parable characters are identified by the role they play, standing (or falling) as representatives for the purpose of teaching a lesson. But Jesus names one character whose identity is repeatedly dismissed and devalued by his foil in the story. Lazarus is given a name, and in that decision his humanity is emphasized. That focus also calls our attention to the lies that can cause us to dehumanize others in the same way that the rich man does to Lazarus.

The Lies that Dehumanize

In this episode, we meet Social Impact Pioneer Maaria Mozaffar — a legislative attorney, human rights policy strategist, and author of inclusive policy. Maaria’s life work proves that lasting change begins not with slogans, but with courage and conversation. From writing inclusive laws to confronting systemic inequity, Maaria’s journey reveals how anyone — yes, anyone — can participate in reshaping the policies that define our lives.

Across today’s headlines, and the headlines of inequality the dehumanisation of communities through policy and enforcement is very much a reality. Maaria joins us to untangle that thread and to ask — what does justice look like when we centre humanity, empathy, and inclusion in our laws?

An attorney, mediator, and author, Maaria Mozaffar has been advancing equity since the early 2000s, drafting groundbreaking legislation such as the Inclusive Athletic Attire Act, Faith Behind Bars, and resolutions against cross-cultural bullying and hate crimes. Her legal models have been replicated nationwide, proving that human-centred policymaking is not just possible — it’s powerful.

In conversation, Maaria explains that real reform starts with writing the code itself. She shares how individuals — not just elected officials — can influence the legislative process: learning, listening, and mediating to find common ground. “It’s not politics,” she says. “It’s about refusing to allow any community to be dehumanised.”

From her early days in law school during 9/11 — when she witnessed civil liberties eroding in real time — to her current work mediating conflicts and drafting inclusive laws, Maaria’s career bridges law and humanity. Through stories of legislation that began at kitchen tables and ended in state law, she offers both moral clarity and practical steps for creating accountability, transparency, and dignity in policy.

This is a conversation about courage, systems, and the belief that transformation is possible if we’re willing to engage.
