Déplorant que les grands artistes des siècles passés n’aient pas bénéficié de témoignages contemporains fiables, le critique d’art Théophile Silvestre voulut prévenir cette lacune en se lançant, en 1852, dans la rédaction de portraits d’artistes de son temps. Adoptant une démarche d’historien, Silvestre est allé ainsi à la rencontre des peintres et des sculpteurs,
les interrogeant lui-même, essayant de « pénétrer, du même coup d’oeil, l’âme de l’homme et l’oeuvre de l’artiste ». Consacrés à dix grands noms de l’époque (Ingres, Corot, Delacroix, Courbet, etc), cet ouvrage, succès immédiat et durable lors de sa publication en 1856, est enfin réédité.
