The countdown begins for the Arctic Winter Games in Alaska. 

There are only six days to go as over 300 Team NT athletes prepare to compete with athletes from all over the country, Alaska, Kalaallit Nunaat, and Northern Scandinavia.

Jack Blake is a 22-year-old from Fort McPherson and will compete in the Dene Games category.

Blake acknowledges that these games have developed over time from a means of survival to now a cultural staple of Dene tradition. 
 
Blake with the rest of his peers are scheduled to land in Yellowknife on Friday and take off to Alaska over the weekend.

Since 1970, the Arctic Winter Games have been uniting athletes from the circumpolar North through sport but also culture. 

This year in the Matsu region of Alaska the games kick off for a weeklong venture of fun, friendships and memories for over 2,000 young athletes.

CKLB Reporter Mariah Caruso spoke with Shawna McLeod on returning to the games after nearly a decade away from the sport.

Mcleod, 32, will be competing in the Dene Games and she’s ready to represent the Dehcho region on the main stage.

Only 4 days away from this year's Arctic Winter Games in Alaska and Team NT is all geared up and ready to tackle the competition. 

Julianne Groenewegen is a 17-year-old athlete from Hay River. 

This is Groenewegen's 2nd time competing in the archery category.
