     and pillow. I lift a blanket to my face.
There’s bitter incense paired with something sweet, 
     like sandalwood left sitting in the heat	
or cardamom rubbed on a piece of lace.

     For weeks I breathe his body.  In the sheet
I smell anise, the musk that we secrete
     with longing, leather and moss. I find a trace  
of bitter incense paired with something sweet.

     Am I imagining the wet scent of peat	
and cedar, oud, impossible to erase?
     For weeks, I breathe his body in the sheet—
crushed pepper—although perhaps discreet,
     difficult for someone else to place.

There’s bitter incense paired with something sweet. 
     With each deployment I become an aesthete
of smoke and oak. Patchouli fills the space
     for weeks. I breathe his body in the sheet	
until he starts to fade, made incomplete,
     a bottle almost empty in its case.

Originally from a small town in west Texas. Growing up my dad moved us around a lot usually ever 3-4 years Until I was 16 when I moved out. I was always into sports as a kid. I started playing youth Football (Pop warner) and Baseball when I was 6. My older brother got me into Hip-Hop and Punk Rock around the same time. I started racing dirt bikes (Motocross) when I was 11/12 and it's the only sport that I am still active in. I started really getting into music when I was 15 and started teaching myself how to play guitar and how to write music, and I went full on Punk Rock. 
At 26 I decided to join the Army and shipped to Basic 3 days before my 27th birthday. After 7 years of service and a Combat deployment I was Medically Retired in 2014. 
For the last 10 years the two things that kept me from taking that ride down the Sewer Slide is Moto and Music. Music kept me going as a Youth, Kept me Pushing though Iraq and at home when all hell was breaking loose in my life. Racing is for fun and keeps me grounded, but Music is my Life line. My first release "Ode to the TEP" is my first release but not my usual genre but it brings me back to one of the bands that kept me motivated while deployed. If you can guess the Band, bonus points for you. and it's not that hard to guess...

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Simply Resilient Podcast. My name is Jessie Ellertson and this is life coaching from a military wife who is in the trenches of life with each of you. This is a podcast for military wives who know how to handle the challenges of deployments and frequent trainings, but want to stop feeling mentally miserable in the process. You know what to do and you’re doing it, all while holding down the fort at home, but you are weary from living in survival mode and battling with your brain. Emily, a pop/rock/adult contemporary singer/songwriter from northern California, has been writing songs since her teens, and singing as long as she can remember. After releasing her self-titled EP (2004) and full length La La Land (2008), she tucked her music away and focused on raising her family. In 2021, after the world had taken a dramatic turn, she returned to the craft, and subsequently, the recording studio. In 2022, Emily released the single The Door is Always Open. Then, in 2023, she released the singles Infinitely (featured on GoodDay Sacramento) and Anybody But You, both preludes to her upcoming album, Love, Emily, a relatable collection of love letters to family, which will include updated versions of the previously released tracks. Also slated for release in 2024 is the cozy Christmas single, If You’re Not Here. Emily feels fortunate to have worked alongside gifted LA producer/multi-instrumentalist Dan Marfisi over the past two decades, and honored that cellist Cameron Stone (Game of Thrones) has graced two of her tracks, Life is Funny  (La La Land ), and So Loved, from the upcoming Love, Emily.
