Une relecture avisée de l’histoire démographique du Pacifique, et une contextualisation historique salutaire des caractéristiques des sociétés océaniennes « traditionnelles ».

Les chapitres centraux présentent au lecteur une image composite de la question de la dépopulation océanienne à partir du début de l’exploration européenne — qui remonte pour certaines îles à près de 500 ans. L’objectif est de montrer la réalité de l’effondrement démographique océanien pris dans son approche globale, d’en mesurer l’importance statistique et d’identifier les principales conséquences de la perte de la majeure partie de la population pour les sociétés traditionnelles du Pacifique.

A propos de l'auteur :
Christophe Sand, archéologue calédonien (HDR), responsable durant trois décennies de l’archéologie de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, étudie depuis 40 ans le passé des peuples du Pacifique à travers des recherches de terrain en Mélanésie, en Polynésie et en Micronésie. Il a publié des ouvrages, et des articles scientifiques et des livres de vulgarisation traitant des différentes périodes de l’histoire océanienne, du peuplement Lapita jusqu’au bouleversement colonial. La restitution des résultats aux habitants des îles et la sauvegarde des vestiges du passé constituent pour lui des engagements essentiels.

Once numbering at least 40-60 million, settler colonial men once hunted the buffalo through the train windows for sport – who had the most kills.  By 1890, however, there were less than 1,000 buffalo with only 23 surviving in Yellowstone’s Pelican Valley. Today, in Yellowstone National Park, the buffalo are trapped for slaughter and quarantine. In fact, once migrating into Montana, the buffalo are under the control of the Department of Livestock instead of Yellowstone Park National Service. When trapped, the buffalo are often tested for Brucellosis – the disease given to them by cattle.

In Gardiner, MT, a group of 28 buffalo migrating into Gardiner Basin were recently trapped by Yellowstone National Park at Stephens Creek near Gardiner, Montana. The group was the first buffalo to migrate into the basin this season. Another group of 49 buffalo migrated beyond Yellowstone National Park’s trap and the remaining buffalo retreated from the National Forest to Yellowstone National Park.
