Time Piece is a peculiar “open sounding” composition in 6/4 intended for live looping. The glockenspiel melody was taken from Time by Sandy Bird.    While the main theme here is obvious, the work also draws from Carl’s experiences performing with his high school marching band.
	Time Piece was recorded by Jason Foppe (who also played the bass guitar tracks) at The Factory in November 2015, and was polished and perfected by Steve Wytas at Dirt Floor Recording Studio in October 2022.

Gift to Governor is an arrangement written for African hand drums and percussion. The foundational 5/4 motif was reverently appropriated from a beat played by Vin Novara in Present to President by The Crownhate Ruin, 1995.  		This composition is an exploration in polyrhythms that features the thunder drum, tank drum, antique marching bass drum, vintage drum set (bass drum, snare drum, tom toms, cymbals, hi-hats), timbale, balafon (African marimba), egg shakers, seed shaker, claves, gankogui (African agogo bells), djembe, doumbek, tambourine, hand claps and cup chime.
	Most of the handmade percussion instruments used in this composition were provided by Christ’s CoMission International, a ministry in the village of Odumase-Krobo, Ghana, West Africa.
	Gift to Governor was recorded and mixed by Jason Foppe at The Factory, Stafford Springs, CT, in February 2015.

Spacious Places is a song of worship and spiritual warfare.  In addition to its bold Biblical message, this piece contains a few other points of interest within its structure. The 10/8 pattern was lifted (and cleverly disguised) from a quirky interlude in Heart of the Sunrise by Yes.  There is also the implementation of a 5/4 against (7/8 + 9/8) polyrhythm.
	The voice in the first sample is that of Jean Allen prophesying over Carl at the Rockville Church of the Nazarene, Rockville, CT on June 14, 2009:

	“In the days ahead you shall break open walls of darkness through the instrument of the drums and through your voice, because I am going to give you an anointing that is far greater than what you have walked in.  It will come into the heavenlies and open doors that the enemy cannot close.  I will breakthrough and breakthrough and breakthrough. The powers of darkness shall come down...”

	This compostion also contains excerpts from a sermon entitled Casting Down Strongholds by Derek Prince, recorded in Singapore, April 1989.  Spacious Places then concludes with a prelude entitled Jubilee Year.

Shores is an instrumental ballad featuring special guests Jordan Nowick (modulated guitar/bass) and Joel Barkasy (synth, guitar).  This song was primarily written for the drum set and contains interesting combinations of odd meters, including 11/4 and 9/4, along with a shifting and illusive downbeat.
	The sound of ocean waves heard in the introduction and conclusion of the song was created with the use of two homemade percussion instruments. A fiberglass gathering drum and a steel shell timbale were turned upside down and filled with a handful of copper-coated steel BB pellets. The pellets in these "ocean drums" were swished across the drum heads to create the sonic effect of rolling waves crashing along a shore.
	This piece was created with inspiration from the Aruban shores, gradients, practicing to a metronome, composing songs using an analog looper, the question of "Where's beat one?", grooves by the bands Hoover (Lurid Traversal of Route 7, 1994) and Karate (Unsolved, 2000), Carter Beauford's tasty hi-hat licks, the beach scene from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, creative and accommodating friends, self-imposed limitations, fun with numbers, obsessive thinking, negative space, nostalgia, Frankenstein guitar melodies, and cello as moorings and sea groanings.
	Shores was recorded by Steve Wytas at Dirt Floor Recording Studio, Haddam, CT, in March 2020.  Mixing was finally completed in January 2022.

I'd like to keep this simple and straightforward to avoid sounding pretentious.  No poetic filler here.  My name is Carl White, and I having been playing and studying the drums and a variety of percussion instruments since about 1985.  I have a particular fascination with odd time signatures and polyrhythms.  The Salt Museum is the name of my "percussive arts" studio in Connecticut, and I have also used that moniker for the collection of songs from my various bands, solo works and collaborations with other artists over the years.  I hope that you enjoy listening to these assorted pieces as much as I enjoyed composing and performing them.
