Sleepwalking into fascism

So get this... the ghost of Sir Winston came to me in a dream and before I could adjust my flannelette pyjamas he starts melodramatically hopping around the room and ranting like no one's business.

I'm like, "what on earth are you doing? I'm trying to sleep you raging pillock".

And he's like, "Shut it ya daft tit. The world's going to the fish 'n' chippers and I've written a protest song that I'd rather like you to record for me you limey Jackson Pollock"

So half asleep I say "what happened to the other Sir?"

And he said, "Never you mind that other Sir laddie! Get into yer studio and get thee cooking. There's a world to save."

"Okay", I said. I'll invoice you when it's done."

This is a song that was written in reaction to the embarrassingly sanctimonious bleating of US politician and Trump stooge, Ron De Santis, decrying every instance of human compassion, decency and warmth, as a despicable symptom of 'woke'.

The irony wasn't lost on me that these are the very same people who swear every last craven 'thought and prayer' to a deity who stood so stoically and unambiguously for the values of compassion that repulse them to their frozen and utterly rotten, cruel cores.

It is ultimately best thought of as a song that reaches from beyond the grave to kick Donald Trump squarely in the 'bone spurs'.

Florida statute 1004.32.1(c) supposedly guarantees New College of Florida "provide programs of study that allow students to design their educational experience as much as possible in accordance with their individual interests, values, and abilities."  
Why? 

And why is this under threat? 

An administration that insists on core classes presenting one particular view of history, philosophy, and civic life would threaten the educational system described in the sources in the following ways:

It would directly contradict the educational philosophy of New College. The college's "Basic Assumptions," as outlined by its founding dean, emphasize individual student responsibility for their education, real mastery over the accumulation of credits, and the pursuit of in-depth studies in areas of interest. [1, 2] Imposing a rigid core curriculum with a singular viewpoint would directly contradict these principles by limiting student choice and potentially forcing them to engage with perspectives they do not find valuable.
It would undermine the flexibility and individuality of New College's contract system. Unlike traditional universities with rigid majors and minors, New College utilizes a contract system that allows students, with the guidance of faculty sponsors, to craft individualized learning plans. [3-7] This system enables students to explore their intellectual curiosity across disciplines and pursue areas of concentration that align with their individual goals. A standardized core curriculum clashes with this approach by limiting the flexibility and individuality that defines the contract system.
The emphasis on pre-determined content contradicts the college's focus on process-oriented education. The sources emphasize New College's dedication to a holistic and individualized approach to learning. [8, 9] This includes fostering critical thinking, self-direction, and intellectual autonomy through activities like Independent Study Projects (ISPs) and Senior Projects. [6, 10-12] By mandating a specific viewpoint in core classes, the administration would shift the focus from the process of learning and exploration to the memorization of pre-determined content. This directly undermines New College's commitment to cultivating intellectual independence and critical thinking skills in its students.
The potential for homogenization threatens the unique aspects of a New College education. The sources repeatedly highlight what makes New College distinct: its focus on individualized learning, its contract system, and its emphasis on student-driven exploration. [3, 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14] By imposing a standardized core curriculum, the administration risks homogenizing the educational experience, potentially making New College less appealing to prospective students seeking a distinctive alternative to traditional higher education.

The educational system threatened by the New College takeover - 09/30/2024

Dr. Paul Ortiz, a professor of labor history at Cornell’s ILR School, joins co-host Olivia Paschal to discuss the history of higher education labor organizing in Florida, the resurgence of right-wing and austerity politics in public universities, and Dr. Ortiz’s work in higher education labor organizing. Until last year, Dr. Ortiz was a professor of history and director of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida, where he spent fifteen years. Dr. Ortiz is also the past president of United Faculty of Florida-UF and has organized with the United Farm Workers, the Farm Labor Organizing Committee, and other labor organizing groups. His books include An African American and Latinx History of the United States and Emancipation Betrayed.

Correction: In the episode, Olivia says that public-sector workers in Virginia can't collectively bargain. While that is true for state-level public sector workers (like university employees), collective bargaining is possible on the local level thanks to a 2020 law that gives local governments and school boards the authority to allow collective bargaining. Collective bargaining for all!

Damit Amendment 3 jedoch tatsächlich Gesetz wird, benötigt es mehr als 60 % Zustimmung, da es eine Verfassungsänderung für den Bundesstaat darstellt.

Interessant ist, dass die Cannabis-Frage auch politische Lager trennt: Während Gouverneur Ron DeSantis gegen die Legalisierung kämpft, hat Donald Trump, der selbst in Florida lebt, öffentlich für Amendment 3 plädiert und dazu aufgerufen, nur den Konsum im öffentlichen Raum einzuschränken. Die Initiative genießt parteiübergreifende Unterstützung: 78 % der Demokraten, 73 % der Unabhängigen und 53 % der Republikaner befürworten das Amendment. Sollte die Abstimmung erfolgreich verlaufen, wird sie den Besitz von bis zu drei Unzen (ca. 85 Gramm) Cannabis für Erwachsene legalisieren. Damit könnte Florida eine wegweisende Rolle in der nationalen Cannabispolitik der USA übernehmen.

Dr. Michael Binder von der Universität Nordflorida ist zuversichtlich: „Nach jahrelanger Unterstützung für medizinisches Cannabis ist jetzt auch die Bevölkerung bereit, den Freizeitkonsum zu legalisieren.“ Ein Erfolg von Amendment 3 könnte ein weiteres Zeichen für den Trend zur Legalisierung in den gesamten USA setzen.
