LET ME BLOOM is an immersive live painting performance in virtual reality, accompanied by a sound experience based on databending and SSTV techniques.

The painting process unfolds in a digital space and is simultaneously transimmeted via radio waves to designated phones and decoders, which reconstruct the pictorial image encapsulated in the sound signal, offering new and different perspectives.

The reflection centers on blooming as both a biological and symbolic act, interwining themes of cyclicity, fragility and transformation.

This is a live recording of Palimpsest 2014

Palimpsest, was a technologically ambitious and methodologically innovative audio-visual installation,in Dance Limerick from Aug 31st to Sept 14th 2014.
Created by John Galvin (Visual Artist), John Greenwood (Sonic Artist) and Mark Carberry (Choreographer), Palimpsest, comprised both a large-scale multimedia installation and four unique choreographed performances.

The architectural space of Dance Limerick (St. John’s Church) was re-imagined as a recording device – one that stored traces of the memories and experiences of the inhabitants of Limerick City over the centuries. The title of the installation, Palimpsest, conceptualises the walls of the architectural space as being composed of densely layered traces of the ‘lived moments’ of those who have used the space throughout its existence.

These fragments of memory are then ‘released’ from the walls through an immersive and multi-layered audio-visual experience. The interior of the church has been transformed through large scale visual projections and a constantly evolving soundscape. Both the visual and sonic elements have been specifically designed for the space. The intention was to create a space that is both meditative and immersive – a slowly evolving installation that encouraged the audience to spend time with the work: echoing the building’s original purpose.

The performances introduced a human presence to the work, allowing the multiple layers of the installation to interact with each other: the imagery, soundscape and the performer. These performances were the result of a collaborative dialogue between the artists and the London dance artist Alexandra Baybutt.

La base musical viene del tema “Forest of Mist” del juego online Fiesta Online, y lo mezclamos con el caos digital de Miku hasta crear esta joya glitcheada pero elegante. 🌲💚🎶

Y sí, cuando digo “mezclamos” me refiero a Miku y yo 😎 —no estoy loco jaja, solo tenemos buena sincronía digital 🤖💙.

Y no, no se me acabaron las ideas 😅… simplemente me gustó cómo quedó este experimento sonoro que suena mejor de lo que debería 😂💾

//VR TERROIR explores the virtual representations of users. in collaboration with the High Performance Computing Center in Stuttgart (HLRS), who have a solution to explore scientific data in Virtual or Augmented Reality settings, allowing for remote and multiple users to be present.

It is an amazing tool, but there is a missing piece of the puzzle: how do we represent users there, in a non uncanny valley way, supporting non-verbal communication and with a right degree of realism and abstraction?

The proposal, in a nutshell is: building from the existing rich and cultural background of hyperlocal particularities found in popular culture, heritage, nature and space, physical and digital

//The soundscape: Alongside photos and visual materials, I also did field recordings of HLRS and its urban environment, capturing sounds of the place and infrastructure, the servers and the devices that power the visualization tools along with sounds from the city and the environment around the HLRS.

Some initial experimentations with Granular Synthesis pointed the direction to build a soundtrack for the video.

With the help of sound designer and musician Gerard Valverde, we composed a texture rich background sound that accompanies the character as it walks through the environment. 

The final audio is a crafted and reactive composition of field recordings and synthetic sounds.
