A short theme I wrote to test my VSL Dimension Strings template. In this piece every section is divided in two groups, the celli in three. The library is designed to make all sorts of divisi-writing possible, so I wanted to try that.

Dimension Strings Test

I'm gonna pretend that I'm far away from this place
I'm gonna play my bass

I've been sick for a long time now
I was sent up the Magic Mountain to get well
For how long nobody would tell

Nobody's sure what is the cure and what's the disease
But the chaplain prays and the doctor stays 'though I wish he'd leave
They put my night terrors down to errors in my dosage
But I know they've made a mistake in my diagnosis

See they don't know that you broke my heart
When you showed up and stopped what we'd started, oh I grieved
Why did you have to leave?

If I could go back to any place
I'd go straight to the sacred space in your embrace and I'd stay 'til I die
Oh but I can't, can I?

Now I'm above you and your love they say I'll survive

Still memories of you and me they uselessly linger
As I sit with these strings under my fingers

There's a girl here who cuts her skin
She says skin is the thing that keeps us locked in and apart from each other

And we sit up here watching  the view
We'll sit all summer and all winter through
We sit together, just us two

I don't know what she thinks about but I think of you

Arpeggio Violins

Here are five excerpts of Arnold Schoenberg's VERKLÄRTE NACHT (if you're not familiar with this piece, it PRE-DATES his shift to 12-Tone madness) I used to work on "MIDI mock-up" speed (with VSL's DIMENSION STRINGS), in this instance, mainly to work on BEAT-MAPPING--adjusting the tempo to closely mimic a famous KARAJAN recording of this insane piece. (Hence, tempos fluctuate throughout, hopefully creating a more musical "flow.") Should've spent more time on certain things, obviously (trills in the 1st part, better dynamics automation to bring out more internal lines, etc.), but the real experiment was this "tempo" trickery! Good times :-) Thanks for checking these out, if you get a sec!

PS: The last one is LOUD! And is the least "realistic" sounding (except for the ending), IMHO...
PPS: The "HISS" (noticeable at the end of each example) is ROOM TONE I intentionally added.

VerklarteNacht Op4 - 1 SehrLangsam Xrpt1

Took a quick "crack" at "Shawshank Prison (Stoic Theme)," again, trying to (within reason) mimic the subtle tempo shifts of the real/original "human" recording. This one was way less involved (smaller ensemble) than the last couple weekends of MOCK-UP MANIA, but I've long loved this film, and everything to do with it--especially Thomas Newman's music :-) Maybe I'll watch this fab film again, for the first time in ages...

Shawshank Prison (Stoic Theme) with VSL Dimension Strings

A rock singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/film composer, Dale Turner is also an instructor at Hollywood's Musicians Institute, and author of 50+ instructional books/transcription folios (his latest being "Power Plucking - A Rocker's Guide to Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar"). He writes a monthly acoustic guitar column for Guitar World magazine, and is featured in their "Lick of the Day" app for iPhone/iPad. A Los Angeles resident, Turner is also the former West Coast Editor (1996-2007) of the now defunct Guitar One magazine.

Turner composed the original score for the animated short film WEEDS, the first animated short to be completed within the Filmmakers Co-op at Disney Feature Animation. WEEDS was one of three "commended" (extra) films included in 2018 OSCAR NOMINATED SHORT FILMS: ANIMATED SHORTS, the theatrical release of five Academy Award nominated animated shorts--Dear Basketball, Garden Party, Lou, Negative Space, and Revolting Rhymes--nominated for the 90th Academy Awards.

Guitar Player Magazine calls Turner's latest CD, Mannerisms Magnified: "Smart pop tunes that are crammed with interesting guitar parts and tones ... Like what the Beach Boys might do if they were on an acid trip that was on the verge of getting out of control. Yeah!"
