Propaganda has long been a powerful tool for shaping public opinion, influencing international discourse, and justifying military actions. In Russia’s war against Ukraine, propaganda has been a central instrument for creating narratives that legitimize aggression, undermine democracy, and manipulate perceptions both domestically and internationally.

This episode is a recording of a public event held by Central European University in Vienna. The speakers of the event were: 

- Teresa Marques, a philosopher of language, Associate Professor  at the Philosophy Department of the University of Barcelona
- Juliane Fürst, a historian, professor at the Department of Historical Studies at Central European University. 
- Volodymyr Yermolenko, a Ukrainian philosopher, president of PEN Ukraine and chief editor of UkraineWorld. 

The event was moderated by Fabio Lampert, Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Vienna.

It was organized by the Knowledge in Crisis, a Cluster of Excellence supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

This is my first attempt at making a more neurofunk track (my favorite dnb style).
For this track, I focused on learning more about sound design in Serum2. I wrote the lyrics and then generated the voice using ElevenLabs; after that, I applied various FX to it.
I hope you enjoy it.

In August 2024, unrest swept across the UK after the tragic killings in Southport, fuelled by online misinformation and weaponised fears about migration. In Bristol, the tension erupted in Castle Park and outside the Mercure Hotel, where asylum seekers were housed. The police presence was thin. The danger was real. And yet, what happened next was extraordinary, ordinary Bristolians put their bodies on the line to defend their neighbours.

We Don’t Do That Here is a one-hour audio documentary from Bristol's community radio stations - BCfm and Ujima, weaving together multiple in-depth interviews with those who lived it: refugees inside the hotel with their children, activists and local residents on the streets, police officers, youth workers, charity leaders, journalists, and community broadcasters. Their voices reveal the fear of that week, the courage of those who stood in solidarity, and the deep divisions that surfaced under pressure.

The programme also investigates the powerful role of media and misinformation, such as how a single false claim spiralled into riots, how national outlets inflamed stereotypes, and how community radio and grassroots networks became lifelines of truth. Listeners hear not just about what happened, but why, and what it tells us about Britain in an age of polarisation.

Above all, this is a story of resilience. From smiles through hotel windows to grandmothers holding banners, from grassroots charities to city-wide counter-protests, Bristol’s communities demonstrated that hate would not go unchallenged. This documentary asks: what does it take to keep a city safe, welcoming, and united, and what can the rest of the country learn?

Joseph Lamar Simmons Talks About the Dangers of Disinformation in Modern Security

Filipino journalist Maria Ressa received the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to protect freedom of expression. She spent several decades working for CNN in Asia and later headed the news division of the Philippines’ largest media conglomerate, ABS-CBN. Exhausted by breaking news, Ressa left the media giant in 2010 and wrote her second book. Yet just two years later, she launched the online outlet Rappler.

One of the site’s main focuses was combating disinformation and corruption, as well as documenting human rights abuses committed by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte launched what he called a “war on drugs,” but used it to sow fear across the country. According to Ressa, in his desire to control the army and police, he granted security forces the power to kill people with impunity. During the first three years of his rule, up to 28,000 Filipinos were killed under the “war on drugs.”

Because of Rappler’s criticism of the authorities, dozens of criminal cases were opened against the outlet and its journalists. Maria Ressa could have ended up in prison for a long time at any moment. Today, only one criminal case against her remains before the Philippine Supreme Court, and Ressa’s lawyer is Amal Clooney. In March 2025, Duterte was arrested on a warrant from the International Criminal Court and is currently being held in a detention facility in The Hague. He is accused of crimes against humanity committed during his “war on drugs.”

Journalist Nataliya Gumenyuk speaks with Maria Ressa about the “war on drugs” in the Philippines and Duterte’s persecution, the role of tech giants in the erosion of democracy, the virus of disinformation and its impact on societies, and how Ressa manages to work from different corners of the planet.
