The auto-played piano part is created using spectral analysis of the audio track (aircraft noise, explosion and baby crying) from the video of a warplane attacking a house. The original sound was slowed down from 3 seconds to 4 minutes to make everything discernible and then transcribed for piano. The score was not composed or performed by human: the pitches and rhythms correspond  to the original sound. The dynamics and range are have been edited to make everything audible and emphasize important details.

From the second minute the music drastically changes: a child begin to cry after the thunderous explosion. 

The live-electronics part comes from the piano part enriching it with real-time effects.
All the effects are based on sound taken from the piano by the microphone during the performance, and the changes in the electronics are controlled (also without any performer) by a pre-written algorithm.

Machines do not think about war. But there is a human being behind the every instruction.

Спектральный анализ аудиозаписи видео-кадров (приближение, взрыв и детский плач), на которых запечатлен момент ракетной атаки истребителя на жилой дом на территории Украины, был использован для создания партии автоматического пианино: это буквальная фортепианная транскрипция, замедленная с 3-х секунд исходного звука до 4-х с половиной минут, чтобы сделать все структуры различимыми. При этом ни одна нота не была сочинена или исполнена человеком: звуковысотности и ритмы точно соответствуют исходному звуку, а динамика и диапазон некоторых структур были отредактированы с целью сделать их слышимыми. Со второй минуты композиции музыка сильно меняется: после отгремевшего взрыва в тишине заплакал ребёнок. 

Партия лайв-электроники вытекает из партии фортепиано, дополняя её электронными эффектами в реальном времени. Все эффекты исходят из звука, снятного с рояля микрофоном во время исполнения, а изменения в электронике контроллируются (так же без участия какого-либо исполнителя) заранее написанным алгоритмом.

Машины не думают о войне. Но за каждой инструкцией стоит человек.

Something fun - here's an old piece of mine from the 90's.  While its most likely not playable by an individual pianist, it is playable on a disklavier.  More specifically a Yamaha baby grand at Susquehanna University that is equipped to play midi files like an updated player piano!  This is not a Tango in the Argentine sense so much as a highly stylized piece that evokes some of the rhythmic elements.  I built it on what I call an "artificial harmonic series" where each ascending interval is a half step smaller (P5, d5, P4, M3, m3, M2, m2).  I found the complete pencil manuscript in an old notebook the other day.  

At the VCFA Music Composition residency last January, Devin Barone, the assistant program director, was getting into this disklavier in a big way.  I rushed back to my dorm room and managed to dig a version of this piece off my hard drive (probably Finale 3.7.2!) and quickly gussied up a midi file.  Devin got it running on the Yamaha, and my advisor Roger Zahab stuck his IPhone on the piano and grabbed a fast and dirty recording that turned out better than I could have expected.

Composer, new media artist and sound engineer, currently living in Japan. He graduated from the Composition (Moscow Conservatory), Music Theory (Gnessins Musical College – Moscow), and Sound Engineering (Audiovisual Arts of the GITR Film and Television School – Moscow). He currently studies at the Department of Musical Creativity and Environment of the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he is gaining more experience and conducting research.
His works are expressed in electro-acoustic compositions and performances, various orchestral pieces, as well as solo and ensembles.

Explores the use of specific characteristics of hearing (such as sound illusions) to create works of art.

Steve Owens grew up in upstate NY, and has a bachelor's in musicology, a master’s in Music Education and an MFA in music composition from Vermont College of Fine Arts.  He developed parallel careers as a concert flutist and as an educator in Vermont public schools.  He's published band, choral, and chamber compositions with Hal Leonard and Alry.  Steve has since left academics to pursue composition full time. Recent performances include a woodwind quintet played by City of Tomorrow, and an electro-acoustic sextet performed by The Playground Ensemble. His latest work, "Dysphoria" for the Truberry Duo, explores the inner experience of neurodivergence, drawing on his own experience as an autistic educator.
