One of my favorite ideas about evolution is that natural selection doesn't care about individuals. (The only plausible units of natural selection are groups and genes.) This piece plays with this idea by running different source materials (field recordings, sine tone, and flute) through layers of effects that seem perpetually indifferent to the source.

Step 1: You’re going to record a piece of music informed by evolution. Think of stages of evolution, perhaps choosing a specific animal or other life form that evolved over time.

Step 2: Record a piece of music that evolves as it proceeds, based on the patterns (phases, stages) you explored in Step 1. And yes, animals that went extinct are a potential subject.

The life of a plant kept springing to mind, full of life, growing new shoots breaking then eventually changing colour and beginning a slow decay into lifelessness, returning to the earth.

I recorded a short organ loop to cassette, ran that into the CalSynth Rangoon, split into ALA cumulus and used 4x LFOs to vary amplitudes over time.

Tascam ministudio DS -> Split into CalSynth Rangoon + ALA Cumulus + one dry signal. All outputs into ALM Tangle quartet with 4x LFOs applied to the CV inputs. Some light master FX applied in Ableton.

Death and technicolor [disquiet0580]

The Assignment: Record a piece of music that develops like an organism evolves.

Normally I don't submit an already complete track, but this track I did with Zachary Zena Giberson (Ooey) and nnirror for an upcoming album just happened to be the same idea as this week's prompt.  The track is divided into two parts.  In the first half, a mollusc evolves one way and in the second half, the process starts over and evolves differently.  I was interested in the idea that even a subtle change in environment and an organism could turn out completely differently.  The mallets you hear moving in predictable intervals sort of mark sequential changes which trigger different guitar work (kind of like adaptation).  In the second half the mallets move at different intervals.  The crazy sounding primordial stew you hear briefly in the beginning and again in the middle is nnirror's contribution.  Zach and I were working with a bunch of samples he sent in the beginning of the project. I kind of imagine an asteroid crashing into earth and setting off some chain reaction that led to life evolving(not sure if there's anything to that theory but I know I've heard it before.) Zach did a lot of the ambiance and weird sounds which I think gave it kind of a dark vibe.  The name is a reference to Coltrane's A Love Supreme.

Because of this prompt I have been grappling more than usual with half-baked wonderings such as: how might individual-level agency, curiosity and desire eventually contribute to the sum total of evolution if even at all? What does it mean to think of mutations as risky miniature acts of selective rebellion? And how does it feel subjectively for each life form to find themselves as tiny unwitting participants within vast unfolding and unfathomable processes? 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

I decided that mainly I wanted to use the prompt as an excuse to try to take the perspective of an emergent proto octopus - I love that they are some of our most distant and mysterious evolutionary relatives. Well the resulting track is my emotional response to some of these vague, re-volving and unresolved themes anyway. It is perhaps one of the most amorphous things I have ever allowed myself to create so far.

Animoog Z was the only synth I used this time. Oh and I used some aquatic samples to modify a few of my timbres too. This was a fun feature to tinker with.

I dabbled with ZOA generative sequencer in iOS, and incorporated factors of 8 wherever possible, in an attempt to embed some kind of simplistic nod to evolutionary processes. I have also obviously tried to layer my sounds incrementally, to suggest emerging and merging mutations and complexity. But in the end this was all just a jumping-off point for something more intuitive and emotionally exploratory. I enjoyed this prompt, even though the results feel unfinished to me.

Proto Octopian disquiet0580

Various monosynth filter sweeps played against each other and modulated by a couple of Felt Instruments' Smugi sequenced filterbanks. The idea being the sound evolves until it reaches a point of overrunning the system and then extinguishes itself. As I write this, during a second extreme weather event in a matter of days, I can't help thinking of our tenure as a species and the likelihood our evolution may come to a shuddering halt of our own design.

Is Life equal Music? Did music come into being when the first notes appeared in the primordial soup ?
The track is built on this idea: Out of the constant thunderstorm of the early earth raindrops begin to form melodies, the sounds evolving to piano-notes. Evolution starts with the first piano-melodies created by random processes.

This Musical Bots track was again created with the generative MIDI sequencer Transition (free VST-plugin available at www.codefn42.com/transition/index.html), The main instruments were played by groups of bots, the wonder of evolution mapped to the decreasing randomness of the movements.

Evolutionary Phrase Backup [disquiet0580]

My submission this week is inspired by the Gar fish. Out of pure coincidence, this past weekend involved a family trip to the aquarium and the zoo - including the reptile exhibit, so I was able to really tune in to this prompt. The one animal that caught my attention was the Gar. Its long jaw and multiple fins made it almost look like it could crawl out of the water onto land. It reminded me of this video game I used to play as a kid: E.V.O.: Search for Eden for Super Nintendo. I was never good at the game, but the evolution of the initial aquatic characters fascinated me. 

My track is more conceptual and I did not spend as much time on it as I did on my last submissions. But that is important to me because I want to be able to participate in the future even if I am short on time.

In the end, what I came up with is a two part piece. It starts underwater, the Gar develops a heartbeat, emerges onto land, learns to breathe and walks away from the coast into the jungle. The track is bookended by two explosions: the Big Bang and then the meteor that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Just thirteen billion years or so - give or take!
