The AI Middle School Orchestra (disquiet0634)

I’m a bit of a philistine when it comes to classical music (in German “Banause”, which sounds much less sophisticated than philistine). A few visits to the opera as a kid, but that’s about it. So I chose a recording on archive.org of a composer I did not know, Edvard Grieg. The track I selected at random based on length and name: Sigurd Jorsalfar, Suite op. 56, Intermezzo, le rêve de Borghild. Pretty intriguing.

I added two synth layers and a recording from a movie (see cover image for a guess) over the filtered track. I then used several followers on the track to modulate the synths and the movie recording. The result is pretty crazy.

It’s spring outside, time for a walk. A lovely weekend to everyone!

Disquiet0634 - Banausin

I used a piece by John Dowland "Lachrimae Antiquae" filtered with a low pass, then I took my track "caos11" and some of the material I had used to prepare it to create a mix between the two pieces.

couldn't resist the temptation to slow down the original recording (apologies to the caretaker)

muffled it up in ableton live + overlay field recording from my archive + overlay fresh room tone recording

while playing back the alongside the ableton live session, record in a patch on my eurorack palette system (mainly marbles/rings/beads 😏) manually gating triggers to make more/less dense in line with the original recording

During the late 90s to early 00s, I had taken piano lessons. One of the pieces I played were the Three Fantastic Dances by Dimity Shostakovich. This is a recording of the Waltz – Andantino, C major (it took me months to learn and some MIDI note editing to get there).

I used a bluetooth speaker, wrapped it in a muff, put a big cushion over it as if I were to choke it and recorded that. This instantly removed all higher frequencies. Everything below 1200 Hz is from the muffled recording with some Unfiltered Audio SpecOps treatment. The higher frequencies are from the original recording, with al little help from Unfiltered Audio Silo. In the mastering chain, there's a speaker simulation, which bandpasses the frequencies again to give it a nice, cheap feeling.

Disquiet Junto Project 0634: Bust a Move
The Assignment: Record a piece of music on top of a muffled recording of a piece of classical music.

Step 1: Locate a public domain recording of a piece of classical music, perhaps at archive.org.

Step 2: In some manner, muffle the original until it sounds like it is being heard from underground or through a thick wall. Perhaps run it through a low-pass filter. Or actually record it through a thick wall.

Step 3: Listen closely to what remains of the recording after Step 2.

Step 4: Record a piece of music on top of the audio that resulted from Step 2, leaving that foundation audible to some degree.

Tasks Upon Completion:

Label: Include “disquiet0634” (no spaces/quotes) in the name of your track.

Upload: Post your track to a public account (SoundCloud preferred but by no means required). It’s best to focus on one track, but if you post more than one, clarify which is the “main” rendition.

In the background of this track the incidental theatre music that Henry Purcell composed for "Distressed Innocence", or "The Princess of Persia" can be heard - as played by an underground orchestra and emitted from a ventilation shaft.
Harmonic inspiration is taken from this composition and used as the basis for the improvisation on the Hohner Organetta - otherwise completely independent of Purcell's original score.
