For the 31st episode of the Non Serviam Podcast, we spoke with William Gillis about an anarchy worth having. It’s hardly controversial to point out that some proposals made by anarchists for post-state coordination suffer from similar issues proposed by non-anarchist opponents of the status quo. In this episode, we explore how said schemes tend to cause unfreedom through the suppression of complexity, or through the total bureaucratization of human life. As a solution, Will promotes distributed, fluid networks of trade in a world beyond the trappings of patchwork or endless meetings. 

What’s a meaningful way to distinguish between centralization and decentralization? What are some examples of distributed efforts expanding freedom? To what extent would New Municipalist or Ostromite common resource management strategies be utilized within anarchy?

We explore all these questions and more with piercing critiques, in this exciting conversation with William Gillis.

William Gillis is a second generation anarchist, lapsed physicist, and transhumanist, who is interested in exploring the roots of things and expanding degrees of freedom. Introduced to the ideas of anarchy at age five and organizing by age thirteen, Will has gone on to become a prolific writer and political theorist who has undoubtedly made a mark in anarchist history. William is the former Lead Coordinator at C4SS who identifies most with Voltairine de Cleyre's "steal bread for the hungry'' style of market anarchism. Ahmed Ayad is a SQL Engineer by trade, a database guy by education and training, and data dude by passion.

I am currently an Engineering Director of the Managed Storage and Workload Management team in Google #BigQuery, building the best large scale enterprise data warehouse on the planet. 

My team owns the core parts of BigQuery involved in managing user data, metadata catalog, streaming and batch ingestion, replication, resource management and placement, physical sharding, and structured lake analytics. Over the years we have:
- Grew data under management by several orders of magnitude.
- Grew BigQuery's global footprint to more than 20+ regions and counting.
- Enabled the hyper scaling of data analytics for a Who's Who list of Fortune 500 users, both Enterprise and Cloud-native.

I am passionate about building cool technologies at scale, and the effective teams that create them.

Things I did in previous professional lives:

- I have shipped components in SQL Server product since SQL Server 2008. Worked on the Performance Data Collector, Policy Based Management, AlwaysOn, The Utility Control Point, SQL Azure stack from the backend to the middle-tier and Portal, SQL Server Agent, SQL Server Optimizer, and SQL Server Management Tools.

- Did Database research in the areas of Data Mining, Query Optimization, and Data Streaming.

Observability in Java with Micrometer - a Conversation with Marcin Grzejszczak

In this episode of the Data Show, I spoke with Karthik Ramasamy, adjunct faculty member at UC Berkeley, former engineering manager at Twitter, and co-founder of Streamlio. Ramasamy managed the team that built Heron, an open source, distributed stream processing engine, compatible with Apache Storm.  While Ramasamy has seen firsthand what it takes to build and deploy large-scale distributed systems (within Twitter, he worked closely with the team that built DistributedLog), he is first and foremost interested in designing and building end-to-end applications. As someone who organizes many conferences, I’m all too familiar with the vast array of popular big data frameworks available. But, I also know that engineers and architects are most interested in content and material that helps them cut through the options and decisions.
