Dust Devils

Drifting through open window panes
At the peak of summer’s sigh
Motes of ash draping silently
On the windowsill at night
I let it sit till the autumn comes
And the forest fires die
Days of smoke feel familiar now
Even ruin dulls with time

Is there any way, what will it take
To connect this death to our own fate?
Hazy image of someone that you love
Screaming hopelessly in endless flame?

Burn your body to the bone
Spread the ash on the stone
As a ritual, intoned

Pull the Earth From the Sea

Open up my eyes, the sun does shine
The birds are singing in the morning light

Rolling out of bed I watch the sky
Then I remember the world is dying
And then I close the blinds
It’s hard to shake
The ringing that haunts the days

Captives of the moment
With confidence unmatched

I felt my heart collapse
Day long panic attack
Two months to walk it back

I was lifted from the room, and through the roof
There is nothing I can do
I’m rising out of view

Over in a flash, my soul leaves my body
Upward from the ash, I’m struck by what I see:
Oh the lights from the town that frame the trees on the hills
