Experimenting with a dobro that my wife gave me. Thanks honey! Made this swampy blues number with lyrics that reflect some of the mood after the election. Trying to limit the doomscrolling.

I thought I was into a long sonic hut / creative block, so it's a bit surprising that this song came together. It's basically a patchwork of disparate ideas.

The opening sample (and then background drone) is, believe it or not, from Meghan Trainor's "Made You Look" - specifically the section where her backing vocals sing "Gucci on". My intention was to make a whole song out of it. This idea never took off. I even downloaded PaulXStretch to mess with it but it sounded way too easy and uninteresting. But amongst all the fails I found a fun way to endlessly stretch minute portions of the sample using Reason's graintable synth and developed the technique a bit more here.

Few weeks go by, with me unwilling to fool around with the OP-1, or the guitar, or the piano, and feeling overwhelmed by all that can be done in a DAW, I remembered how expressive the opening songs from the Castlevania games were and started looking at YouTube videos about 8-bit sound synthesis. I was surprised to find out that, obviously, it was all basic waveforms and very basic modulation. So I experimented with recreating them with Reason's most basic synths and then realized it would go well with the endlessly stretched Megan Trainor sample. The "NES synth line" is probably my second recorded take of improvised playing in the 30 minutes I get when the kid is being put to bed.

Finally, the title popped into my mind while I was doomscrolling on the computer. I had an instant of awareness of how unaware I was, how distant from real life my mind was drifting - being there, but elsewhere.

This track was finished on September 11, 2024. Mastered in March 2025.

I doomscroll on my phone, and I see stories that fill me with dread
I know I should put down my phone and read a book, but I can’t control the urge
Things get stuck in my brain that I really wish I could purge
It’s a fine line between staying informed and doomscrolling
And it’s so hard to put down that phone once you pick it up and start that ball rolling
There’s a constant stream of bad news that never goes stale
Why can’t the world be more like a fairy tale
Forever chemicals in the water, pollution in the air
Global temperatures rising, and the oil companies don’t care
Russians making nuclear threats and our leaders they just shrug
Some nights it feels like I’m in a hospital bed and they‘re about to pull the plug
