Out (rap; Outsidaz)

After Image is a solo piece for Double Bass, Percussions, and Computer. It is an electroacoustic improvisation that draws its source from purely acoustic input.

The piece deals with the concept of urban living, especially in these isolated times where everyone is forced to look deep into themselves and come to terms with independence and solidarity in a way never before experienced.

Stripped of fundamental elements such as human interaction and communication, one seeks to find a new way of perceiving chronological existence within a sudden hyper-focus on the chronoscopic geography of time.

Weaving every singular instance of sonic reinterpretation together, After Image provides an alternative process of spatial perception and introspection.

Drawing inspiration from Rene Descartes' Discourse on Method in such complex unexplored perceptions of space in time/time in space, there is an inevitable split between mind and body. After Image attempts to address this split on both a macro level of new language of our body and mind on the instrument in response to electroacoustic improvisation; and also on a micro level of the instrumental mind approaching electroacoustic manipulation as the new body. The converse of the micro split is also true.

But what then is an after image? Is it a copy without an original?

Questions arise - where is the original Image and was there really ever one? If there is one, is it just an echo of time and space? If it is, what is then an echo? Is it just simulacra, a blank trace after the image? Or is this blank trace the original Image? If NOT, what is the original Image? Is it still original after observation by ourselves?

The After Image of ourselves is haunted by the fictions of our memories. What seemed to have passed now return in new forms, promising new futures. The echo of memories being the only constant present.

On that note, what is considered true or false from this new split of body and mind? What is real and what is ideal? Is the process now the method, or vice versa? Or both, at the same time? Considering superpositions in every facet of existence, After Image suggests that one never knows until observation is made - before, during, and after the process.

I created this while thinking about how the big fish always eats the little fish, and how the little fish is happily living it's life, eating and trying to find a mate, just so that one day it can die, and as humans we care about that, we care about our loved ones dying.

Born in Kasuga, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan in 1966.
Graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae, Tokyo (musicology).
In 1998, I won the 9th Asahi Composition Award (wind music).

I was the music director and conductor for the Band of Kitakyushu City Fire and Disaster Management Department (2003~2005) and Oita Prefectural Police Music Band (2006~2017).

In 2008, produced ceremony music for the National Sports Festival and conducted the ceremony band and chorus.

I composed many pieces for Wind band and wind instruments, including “EMBLEMS, Militaly March” (the required piece for the 1999 All Japan Band Contest).
The works are performed not only in Japan but also in the United States.
“EMBLEMS, Militaly March” was adopted twice (in 2009 and 2013) as a test piece in the contest in Taiwan.

In addition to composing and arranging activities, I am also a judge for the competition, researcher, and author.
