Un Jueves a la hora de comer, la Tierra es inesperadamente destruida para dar paso a una nueva autopista hiperespacial. Sin embargo, desafortunadamente, el fin de semana apenas comienza y la galaxia es un lugar extraño y sorprendente.

Arthur escapará de la Tierra junto a su amigo Ford Perfect, quien resulta ser un extraterrestre emparentado con Zaphod Beeblebrox, un pirata con dos cabezas que alguna vez fue presidente de la Galaxia. En la nave de Zaphod, Arthur conocerá al resto de los personajes que lo acompañarán en su viaje espacial: un androide paranoide y una terrícola que, al igual que él, ha logrado escapar.
