Today I give you the latest and last (for a while at least) update in my ongoing tribute to Dr Feelgood. This is more of an "influenced by" tribute cover. The song is Lew Lewis's "Lucky Seven". I don't play the Dr Feelgood version. Maybe just as well really if you believe the story that it was the band’s decision to include this song on the “Sneaking Suspicion” album that finally broke Wilko and made him leave the band. Lee Brilleaux would later introduce the song in a tour promoting the album as being “written by a good friend of ours… sort of.”

My rendition is closer to the original, only I play the guitar in more of a Mick Green style. Think "Lonesome Train" and you'll know where my head is at. ‘Mad Lewis’ was a longtime friend of the Feelgoods, performing in early bands and collaborating on songs with Lee Brilleaux, before being sentenced to 7 years in 1987 for armed robbery. A wonderful harp player!

They should put me away too… I certainly murder the solos here! Boom boom!

It’s a term that’s always felt a bit derogatory to me, but today you’ll hear it used to refer to the style of music that started to emerge from this scene. I did say I'd not do another Dr Feelgood number for a while, but as you can see here, I'm breaking my promise. Today I offer a ham-fisted rendition of Dr Feelgood's first hit single and the only one that featured Wilko Johnson: Sneakin' Suspicion. I've just dug out my old vinyls and I actually have this single. It was issued in 1977 under United Artists Records. At the time I bought this(which was a good few years later), my favourite song on the single was actually "Lights Outs" which I would go on to play with The Blisters. Anyhoo... This version is a little closer to the one performed by Wilko and Norman Watt Roy years later. Given my renewed love of harmonica and my desperate attempts to learn it, you get a couple of harp solos instead of Wilko's guitar riffs into the bargain. Now, if only I could find my 12" promo of "She's a windup"...

Sneakin' Suspicion

Introducing “Lights Out”: a tune so fast that even Dr Feelgood were terrified to play it live! I was in two minds about whether to go with a guitar solo, or harp solo. In the end I did both, and even after all that the song still only comes in at a meagre 2 minutes 16 seconds. That's fast!! The song itself is from 1958, originally performed by Jerry Byrne. I love it! If only I could play it! Ha ha. And yes, I had to break my no plectrum rule here, but only for the solo. Will try harder next time...

I first heard “Lights Out” on the b-side to the “Sneakin’ Suspicion” single. It quickly became a part of the set my band - The Blisters - played in the 80s. If memory serves me right, we played it faster than the Feelgood version, but then we played everything fast. Today’s rendition is closer to the version that Wilko Johnson laid down at Rockfield Studios for the “Sneakin’ Suspicion” album, which went on to spend 6 weeks at number 10 in the UK charts in 1977. Wilko Johnson left the band right about this time but not before he got to play “Lights Out” live with the Feelgoods. There is a recording out there somewhere which is worth tracking down if you’re interested in how he tackles the solo on stage. Enjoy!
