LM on tour: Where water wanders

Scientists have found a surprisingly simple way to remove nano plastics and microplastics (NMP's) from drinking water. By boiling water, the nmp's are 'encrusted' with limescale - or calcium carbonate - the chalky substance commonly seen in kitchen kettles. Sieving the boiled water can then eliminate up to 90% of NMP's.

What's right: Scientists have found simple way to remove microplastics from drinking water.

Rakesh Prasad Chaudhary describes his city of Jaleshwor, Nepal. He explains the changes he has seen in the local area, including a water crisis and plastic bag pollution. Over the last few years local water supplies have dried up because of expanded settlement, forest clearing, and exploitation of river water resources. This necessitates deep boring for drinking water and marginalization and relocation of poorer citizens.  

Rakesh recalls his childhood when it would rain heavily in June and July with fish sometimes falling from the sky! Now, he says, fish falling from the sky is like a dream. Climate chage has adversely affected people in Jaleshwor. But to help improve people's lives Rakesh recommends planting trees and digging ponds to collect rainwater. He also formed a team in the city which meets on Saturdays to tackle garbage management and sanitation.

Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new method to generate drinking water. The solar-powered desalination system adapts its energy consumption based on sunlight availability.

i've been archiving all my old hard drives from 2018 onwards and i keep finding old demos of mine that i probably haven't heard since they've been made. i made this one with a buncha demos i found this week , drums were recorded in 2020, main synth sample in 2022 and i'm throwing all this shit together and working on recording new stuff over it today 2025

In this week’s episode, host Daniel Raimi talks with Fiona Burlig, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, about improving access to clean drinking water in India. In partnership with a private company that cleans drinking water and delivers water directly to households, Burlig recently conducted a field experiment to find out how different pricing strategies and subsidies influence people’s willingness to pay for clean drinking water; she and her colleagues gauged the effectiveness of these strategies by monitoring health outcomes for households that had varying levels of access to clean water. Burlig discusses the design and findings of her study, what these findings reveal about how people value clean water, and the involvement of both the public and private sectors in expanding access to clean water in developing nations.

Climate Stories Project (CSP) is an educational and artistic forum for sharing personal stories about the effects of climate change on our lives and communities. CSP focuses on personal oral histories, which bring an immediacy to the sometimes abstract nature of climate change communication. Some of us may recount dramatic events such as floods and wildfires, or we may address our observations of changes in seasonal patterns and our fears for the future of our families and communities. We may discuss how climate change is forcing our communities to adapt to extreme weather and sea level rise. Or we may speak about how we are getting involved in the movement to fight the fossil fuel industry through community organizing or nonviolent protest.There is no "right" way to talk about climate change, as it is a vast topic that is increasingly touching every corner of our lives. CSP also facilitates educational workshops where students learn to speak about their own responses to climate change and interview guest speakers about theirs. In addition, some climate stories are featured in music and soundscape projects that allow audiences to witness the effects of climate change in a novel way.
